1921 Peace Dollar; didn’t need it but

Couldn’t resist the original skin and look to it.

SO many of these have been dipped out to “improve” them….this was a pleasant exception. An above average strike, IMO, and below average price from a dealer friend at a show yesterday, and I had to have it.
Could it benefit from an acetone soak or MS70 treatment? I guess if the goal was to possibly maximize the grade by revealing more luster (and make it look like most of the other 21 peace dollars out there), then maybe.
But I’m keeping it as is.

    If it were me I'd rinse it with acetone just in case there's any yet unseen pvc residue, but otherwise leave it be.

    i agree about the acetone. it will probably move some non-detrimental surfaces oils/grimes etc but unless you have the proper technique/lighting that REALLY highlights any pvc, a dip won't hurt it. i can't comment about ms70. acetone works so well, i never ventured past it. i have however lost a couple cans/jars to lids that apparently weren't sealed tight enough. i do not keep them near the places i spend the most amount of my time just in case. makes me think of those silent killer scenarios.

    The dealer graded it XF45, but I feel it’s a legit AU.
    I’ll also consider a very light application of acetone, based on the inputs provided.

    That is a very nice Peace dollar.... Though I would definitely give it an acetone bath. Acetone will not harm the luster, just allow it to be seen better with the removal of organics that may be on the surface. Show us a picture after you are finished. Cheers, RickO

    Looks AU to me too. Pretty coin, better than average strike. MS70? No!!!!

    Acetone? Maybe. Some of the grunge/grime/character will be removed, but not the nice patina. If you use acetone, do a complete, thorough dip to completely remove all the soluble material. Then rinse again with clean acetone one last time. You don't want the crud re-settling on the coin. Make sure you use the good stuff, not the cheap nail remover that comes with additives.

    Me? I'd probably leave it alone.
