What’s the hottest segment of the US coin market

KISHU1KISHU1 Posts: 2,196 ✭✭✭

Curious about what’s the hottest segment of the US coin market
Is it rare gold, or high grade type, or something else
Does it have to be slabed plus having a sticker
Please try to give specific examples
Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks

The "Pioneer, Territorial, Private" issues seem hot. This one sold at GC last night for $40,000 +/-.

Gold coins are on fire and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I think high-end coins in PCGS CAC of most series are all hot. I've collected and now sold most of my peace dollars. I always went for the grade before the big jump in price. With Peace dollars P mint the big jump is from 66+ to 67. Two years ago most of the Phildaelphia MS66+ CAC coins were $4k to $6k, now except for the common 23 and 25, these same coins are going $7k to $9k. I see it in the auctions and i also see the dealers have them priced at those levels. The exception is the 21 which is finally back tracking a bit after being on fire last year. I started getting into classic silver commemoratives and i can tell you from my experience the better stuff is blowing the price guides away in auctions, again especially PCGS CAC or coins with exceptional color. I'm not particularly following other series right now, but i assume high-end PCGS CAC is ripping high across the board..

Yes- dramatic and expensive proof and mint state error coins are bringing record prices in the Heritage auctions.

The whole market is hot right now, along with other collectibles like baseball cards. The only exception are stamps - they still suck.
I think one thing that is especially hot are those fancy silver rounds. Kids seem to like them. Just high priced bullion but whatever floats your boat ... I’ll always like the silver dollars the best

  • jt88jt88 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am sure the market is hot. You can tell by how many new faces showed up on this PCGS message board.

Stamps are also hot. In the last year, I've sold more stamps at higher prices than in the previous 10 years combined.

In general, most of the coin market is hot.... Just look at this forum... CC Morgans, Peace Dollars, gold, bust halves, seated coins.... they are all moving at higher prices....Lots of buying and selling reported. People going to shows with coins to sell, and the sell all of them.... Then buy coins for themselves. Gold is over 2K now...silver rising.... Cheers, RickO

1903-1945 U.S/Philippines coin values have been moving up with strong momentum.
Sale prices of nicer material often reach multiples of price guides.
The relatively low prices, as compared to other U.S. coins of the same period, the small mintages and low survival rates attract and challenge a focused, growing collector base.

I agree, but I don't see being an insider job as being a problem for interest or pricing.

There's a lot of upside to get up to the levels of the 1913 Liberty Head nickel insider job ;)

CAC approved old gold is really popular. In the last two months, i can recall only three coins that I felt were fair (albeit a bit high) priced. In auctions, forget about it!

Old gold in general is hot. Non generic dates seen to have increased fairly significantly. Generic dates seem to have increased disproportionately to gold spot price(ie the generic date have moved a bit higher than the move in gold price would dictate).

In my other area of collecting, CWT’s is a mixed bag. Fixed price tokens are still being offered at justifiable prices. For CWT’s at auction, my feeling is that 20% go at fair value, 80% go for crazy prices. But I rarely get lucky and find a fair priced one.

I would also say that old gold commems seem to be getting very strong pricing. I got interested when they were out of favor. But now, won’t even consider them.

    My two cents.

I agree with you, in fact I think those insider job error coins can have lots up side in price since they are nice looking and almost unique.

The Eisenhower Dollar era was a time when there were a number of insider jobs at the mint. Some of them, like the Proof Ike Dollars struck on cent planchets, were confiscated.

It’s much harder for large coins and high value coins, like gold pieces, to get though the inspection process. That’s why Morgan Silver Dollars errors are so rare.

In this case all three would have had to have gotten posted the inspectors. They could have ended up in the same bag, but the whole thing looks too perfect to me.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Agree they are now seeing strong pricing; but, they always seem to be available .
