Not a very secure way to package a coin for shipment. The envelope arrived, but no coin. I've now contacted the eBay seller. I wanted that coin! 😢

I've had that happen twice. Both times with silver dollars that were likely put loose, in a regular envelope. Same tear as in the corner of your envelope, when I received the empty contents.

Very sorry that happened. One time a board member shipped a $20 gold piece (common) loose in an envelope, "just to prove it could be done" -- amazingly, it got there. Nonetheless, I had never seen someone so penny-wise and pound-foolish.

No chance of that happening. The coin is on the floor in some USPS processing building. That image shows what happens to a loose coin in an envelope when it's run through a sorting machine.
edited to add... Put a loose quarter in an envelope and seal it. Grab the envelope by one corner and hold the envelope so it hangs behind your shoulder. Flick the envelope forward quickly. This is what you'll see...
If you want to try this yourself, do it outdoors, with a coin you don't mind losing.

Keeping fingers crossed that you get your coin back.
I have found three ASE taped on to the mint set in my package where the envelope got torn in a similar way.
Guess those franking machines are to be blamed and the employee just assumed the ASE was also part of my package. Similarly have lost a couple of coins to such envelope tears where insurance covered the loss. Have to also say kudos to USPS because quite a few of other envelopes that tore got rebagged with contents intact and came with an apology.
It is time for all sellers to start using a lot of tape and also better packaging methods instead of merely sticking it in an envelope and sending it (even worse is if it is sent as risky mail with a forever stamp like a lot of my coins that came in 2020).0 -
There's nothing wrong with shipping a coin using an envelope & stamp if you secure the coin properly. I have mailed thousands of them like that with no damage.

i was curious as i am not even given the option for SE service with an item is .01 over $20. i'll have to dig some more as i've had several items in the 20-30 range i'd like to have shipped that way WITH tracking. thanks
if you communicate with the seller again, you can advise to staple on each side of the item(s) within the packing slip. only way someone is getting a coin outta one of my envelopes is essentially ripping it in half. staples are cheap but need to be used cautiously.

I bought a bunch of Ikes once - something like 200 or 300 of them. They arrived in a horribly over-stuffed, rotund flat rate envelope!!! The vinyl bag inside had torn and dollars were literally leaking out of a hole in the side of the envelope when I picked it up.

Like mentioned, glad it wasn't a $200 coin or even worse a $2000 coin. Whenever I send some coin/s out, I make sure it's well secured and safe. My wife always yells at me for using so much plastic tape! I just wrap and wrap and wrap. Lol

That is just poor packaging. The coin should have been wrapped and taped to the inside and it should have been a bubble envelope. Fault = seller. Cheers, RickO

Happened to me last year. The seller was very indignant about it, said that I should have paid him for insurance.
It took a while, but I got the post office to stamp the envelope "missing contents", refused delivery and had the empty envelope returned to the sender.
The envelope came back to me, I took pictures and filed a non-receipt claim with ebay. I did eventually get refunded.
Seller handwritten my address which had a ZipCode error in it. The package went back and forth from San Francisco to Atlanta three times over six weeks before showing up empty. Seller said he'd mailed over 7,000 packages with loose coins and handwritten addresses without ever having a problem. I told him he could never say that again.
He essentially said "tough luck."

The envelope was sent and then returned to sender for insufficient postage, so they had to send it a second time. It was also a relatively large, heavy coin (40% silver Ike) and the paper envelope just gave out (split down the side).

Yes, first thing i did was take pictures and explained the situation to the seller. No response yet, but that was just yesterday afternoon.

Same thing happened to me from a seller in Germany. Poor packaging. Seller didn't believe me (apparently) and I gave up, probably too easily. Not a particularly valuable coin, my time was worth more. Put the seller on my Do Not Buy list,

In my case, it was a $100 silver medal minted in 1948, counterstamped by a coin club in the late 1990's, probably unique, and totally irreplaceable. Yeah, I would have much preferred the coin.I eventually bought from that seller again but it took a while. The next purchase came with both handwritten and printed address labels. The coin was in a plastic baggie and was taped to a small piece of cardboard in the envelope. Not the best, but better.

I’m leery to advise anyone to use staples. Pull them out incorrectly and you scratch the coin. I’ve been cut more than once trying to get coins free where I had little room to work with or didn’t even see the staple in a thin piece of cardboard. If you want to go the secure route like that I’d say just tape the flip to the invoice, or better yet, put the flip in a small baggy (much stronger to hold the coin in if the flip rips) and consider taping that to the invoice.
