1893-O Morgan - Grade Estimates?

AotearoaAotearoa Posts: 1,621 ✭✭✭✭✭

For sale locally (New Zealand) but no chance to see in hand. Around here, common dates tend to sell for too much and keys are often undervalued. There could be an opportunity but I’m no Morgan expert. Seeking input…

The coin hopefully looks better in hand as the image creates significant doubts as to the quality of the surfaces. There is an obverse rim distraction at the U in UNUM that should not effect the grade. It is in the AU spectrum and looks to be a nice album coin for a raw Morgan set or a Type coin set for one that seeks a better date from New Orleans.

55 but too many distracting marks on the obverse for my taste. I especially dislike the damage to the date.

I’m going with 55, only because it seems to lack luster. Details look 58 though.

This... coin could look better in hand though...

55, too many contact marks in prime focal and handling in fields for a pcgs 58. I am on my screen at store which is not as good as monitor at home, so I cant judge the luster as well here, but dont be surprised if the coin goes 53. If the luster is not bang bang fresh, those marks and such will lower to a 53 IMO.

Edited to add: I am at home now, definitely wont do better than 53

Thanks for the good input. The auction - on our local version of eBay - ends in a couple of days. We'll see...

    Maybe it's just me, but I'm seeing a XF45 :#

Agree with the 55 grade and subdued luster in photo. As the 58 price almost doubles from the 55, I would not purchase raw at a 58 price.

Dipped for sure, stripped of some of its luster, a good chance it was.

At least if you are grading by PCGS standards, I think you’ll change your mind if you take a quick look at photograde. The coin in question appears nicer than the 55 example, but not quite as nice as the 58. This is pretty consistent with the consensus emerging here.

AU50-AU53, that is if it didn't come back cleaned. There are several long scratches on the reverse, hits on the obverse including a rim bruise at 2:00, and enough rub to create a distinguised halo effect around the devices which is cause for concern.

Details I think it’s a higher AU. I don’t think the surfaces are natural, and while lighting plays into it, my gut was that it’s at least been wiped rather than just dipped. Based on the surfaces I’m not a huge fan regardless, but if wiped or worse it may well be a details coin and not a straight grade.

The coin is most likely to sell for AU50 money which, of course, would mean some nice upside if it went higher. Just as obviously, XF and/or details wouldn’t be a pleasant outcome… Probably not headed my way.

I will say AU 53 or 55. Like stated quite a few contact marks on the face of miss Liberty.

That is where I’m at AU-53/5 cleaned but still a upgrade from a F-15. Cool 👍🏼
