1955 DDO -- an old favorite--> GTG: Grade Revealed

This coin is an old favorite, and I wanted to share it as a Guess-the-Grade.

I took these photos and continue to work on learning the techniques. I have great respect for expert numismatic photographers out there-- photography is hard! Please share what you think :)

    I can't make a judgement on it because I think I'm seeing double.

    I say it's a 63BN, I've been looking at low MS examples recently (for... reasons....) and most coins in 58/62 have more surface marks than your coin.

    The hair on the obverse appears to have wear? My eyes suck😉. I’ll stay with 55 or 62.

    My first thought was a very clean 58. But it could go as high as 62 or so.
    The lighting of the photo,though sharp, doesn’t seem to capture the luster very well for some reason.
    So, I’m in the 58-62 camp.

    I believe it's an MS60 from the pictures. Whatever it's graded, that's a nice coin.

    AU58 or MS62. Hard to tell from the pics if there any light wear or not. Nice looking coin in any event. B)

    Tough call. First thought was 58+ BN, but I could see a 63 if it looks better in hand. Always tough when looking at one set of photos.

    I suspected that coating the slab might help-- I recall using Kami fluid in science classes with microscopy for the same purpose. I will try this next time around, and thanks for the tip :)

    @Avocet What do you see on the surfaces that limit this grade to a 58? Is there high point abrasion?

    That is a good question — I wonder if the PCGS 58 grade was influenced by a ‘gouge’ in the forehead (high point abrasion), but CAC countered this opinion?…. I don’t know.

    I've seen some PCGS AU58 graded coins when resubmitted come back as mint state, as high as MS63. To a certain extent, it's a crapshoot.

    For example, Ive got this 1909-S in PCGS AU58, I don't see any wear or rub or break in the lustre. If resubmitted, it possibly could come back as MS but the risk/reward ratio is low (PCGS price guide value in AU58= $315 and $360 in MS62):
