Same serial numbers but different years

I am new to collecting coins as well as currency. I was looking on ebay this morning and I found a $1 bill that had the exact serial number as my $1 bill. I know that it wouldn't be possible in the same year/series. They have Different years and series, my question is, how common is that? And the serial numbers are 72777777. Sorry I'm also new to this forum, I suppose this doesn't go in the us coin forum..
Thank you

Welcome to the forum!
"I know that it wouldn't be possible in the same year/series."
You can find them in the same year.

It is not uncommon to find matching serial numbers here's some more examples for you.

Probably a better question for the Currency Forum, but with a somewhat fancy serial number (as yours can be considered) it is more common because they are saved at a higher rate. Still rather uncommon, all things considered.

Every date series has the same set of serial numbers available.

Thank you, this was very helpful!
Great question.
I am not a collector of "paper" currency but was educated by the replying posts.
I did not know that serial numbers were repeated.

Kennedys are my quest...
Might be a good idea to save a photo for the thread after the ebay links are dead.
The Federal Reserve(s) notes with identical serial numbers is impressive.
Thanks for posting the pictures @ifthevamzarockin.

Yep. You got it. Same serial number. Different FRB.
