2005 Prɔof Quarter found circulation ** SILVER FIND ?

JWPJWP Posts: 26,551 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just got back from making a short trip at Aldi's to pick up some grub for supper. Lo and behold I'm given a 2005 s proof West Virginia Quarter in my change. It looks te SILVER, what do you guys think?? It's kind of a rough and raw coon but it's a proof. My first thought is little Johnny got into Grandpa's coin collection and cracked a 50 state quarter proof set. That's just fine with me cuz I can find a place in my quarter collection and with the note of the story behind it. Kind of like opening up a box of chocolates,
you really never know what you're going to find in change.

Nice find, dude! Esp. If it's SILVER!
To me, I think you have it? Low mintage, regardless.

Your first photo appears to show the clad layer.

I noticed that too, the DM4 will show the clad if it is truly there. The edge has the clad layer real fant if that is it, but i will post a better close up shortly. Thanks, Jon.

@ifthevamzarockin I just got these pics download for viewing/discussion. The clad quarter that used to compare the edof the 2005 WV S proof is a 2012 Arcadia ATB quarter.
After looking at it under the DM4, why is the the questionable layer in the center of the coin and not to one edge like the 2012 ARCADIA QUARTER? nOTE: ONE PIC SHOWS IT TO BE IN THE CENTER AND ANOTHER SHOWS IT AT THE EDGE, IS IT THE AGE OF THE COIN AND/OR THE POCKET CHANGE WEAR AND GRIME?

Thank you MsMorrisine, it looks to have the weight of the Silver quarter plus a little circulation weight (dirt & grime over the years from pocket change). Quite honestly, until your comment telling me to weigh it, I hadn't really considered that option. Thank you for your suggestion and knowledge, appreciate it. Jon.

@joeykoins I just thought I'd let you know that it looks like the 2005S proof West Virginia quarter has the weight of a silver quarter. I weighed it 6.35 g. It's just unbelievable what can be found in Pocket Change.

Get a clad quarter and yours, put a piece of single ply toilet paper over them both. The clad will show gray and the silver will show white.

Yeah!! Good for you. I thought it looked silver. Keep on hunting. Just turned in some silver today that I found in two weeks of coin roll hunting. $42 for just a short stack. Including Roosevelt dimes and one Wartime. Turned that silver into purchasing 2 Beautiful Walkers! Using the $42 + $18 of my dollars.
    ;)
    Keep on hunting!

I've found 10 war nickels in the past few month, 1 dime and 2 quarters. I mainly lok for the "W" quarters and have found 21 the last 11 months and 3 of those were last week. You are right just keep hunting, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. :)

That is a great find.... Silver in change - super. I did find a quarter on the floor at the supermarket yesterday... Seeing it laying there, I thought it was silver, but it was 1966. Still, fun to find a quarter just laying around. Cheers, RickO

Congrats on a cool find. I have found many rolls of silver halves over the years, but just a few quarters, dimes and war nickels and only one Ike. In fact, halves are the only rolls I get any more and they are now few and far between.

@jesbroken Understand, the bank's are very limited in giving out rolls of coins these days.
