I love seeing quantities of bust halves, and those look special. I remember great quantities back in the 70's and early 80's.
A vest pocket guy, locally back in the late 70's, came in my shop. I had never met him before this. "Do you have any bust halves ?", he asks me. "I've got a few somewhere", I tell him....."Never mind", he says...."I need quantities.....I'm trying to put together a bag"....."A BAG",I exclaim....."are you serious?"....
This guy then goes out to his car and comes in with a canvas bank bag. "I've got 700 or so already"....My goodness, he did !
We became good friends and did many deals together in subsequent years. My friend Jim passed away 7 or 8 years ago......

Great story and memory…..what did he ultimately do with them?

Thanks Herb.......unfortunately, I don't remember what happened to the lot. I'm not sure that I ever knew.

Well, do we get to hear the story if how you acquired such a hoard??
Has the look of one large deal.. 🤔

That’s quite the mini hoard you got there.

How many die marriages are you up to now? Any plans on joining the BHNC one day?

Well, I have a number of graded CBH while graded don’t have an Overton number to them, so I need to spend some time with my books and coins.

    Nice pickups indeed

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

WOW!! Did you get ALL of those in one lot?? At the same time?? I have never acquired a large group of coins all at once.... Even at shows, I think the most I ever left with was two coins. Except when I purchased a four coin gold set of Britannias.... but that counted as one acquisition. Cheers, RickO

Wow @Herb_T you went shopping at that Founding Fathers sale!

  • sumduncesumdunce Posts: 1,247 ✭✭✭✭

I rarely pick up more than a few slabbed coins in one day, but by my estimate 48 slabs at once is impressive. Then considering they are all capped bust halves, WOW! Nice purchase. I hope you get some interesting die marriages on the unattributed ones.

Yup, that's what I'd do is examine every single coin under magnification, savoring all the details. Nice. Peace Roy

    Nice ones Herb!
Especially like the 1809 107a... that was my first 1809 and a somewhat tough one as well 👍
Do you have a shot of the 1808 107a?

  • jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,609 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wow, those are some beauties. If they all have that AU look, I would love to see them.

Which coin did you want master? I have some worn Indian Pennie’s I can give out…..

That auction was one of the most single auctions with decent CBH. That was why I was bidding…..

I really like the CBH coins, they have personality with the different attributes/varieties and I really love the die cracks….

  • Herb_THerb_T Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭✭✭

This one got away from me….I was already over my limit and I didn’t need to commit suicide chasing one coin….the bidding was real strong for this coin. PCGS price guide has this coin at $7,000. As you can see it blew right on past the guide for a PCGS graded coin,
