Restoration before and after photos

Some people asked about restoration results, so I am going to show couple of them. They are all PCGS. A seller told me that he think NGC copper restoration is better than PCGS. I don't have enough data to compare both of them. But I do know I once sent a copper coin to NGC. it came back with PVC body bag. Then I sent it to NCS for restoration, it came back with NGC MS65 grade. I can't find that coin photo any more because it was more than 10 years ago.

Interesting, especially the gold proofs. I wonder what would happen with this coin🤔

Interesting comparisons... I am not questioning the pictures, but I would really like to see those in hand. So much can be done with coin photography. I am glad it worked out so well for you. Cheers, RickO

I love how the second coin was flipped with the TrueViews.

I like the "before" better than the "after" for the Chinese coin. Hard to compare the gold coins since the lighting is completely different in the "before" and "after" pictures.

I think the Chinese coin got worse. For the gold, I’m guessing haze was removed, but since the photos are taken in drastically different lighting there’s really no way to say, but I’ll guess the coins got better based on the huge jump in grade.

Not buying it with the True Views - Always said the TV's were "Glamour Shots" . Yes, and the Chinese silver coin looks just "Brightened" to an unnatural level - Sorry PCGS.

I am really confused as to how the heck this happened. Several grades up. Well now, should I send every dang coin I got. The friggin pictures don’t look right. I’m happy for the OP but not so much personally. Seems wrong I look at my coins as junk now. Hurry send em in $$$$$. Not a good look seems almost like cheating. 🤨🙀( someone woke up grumpy 😂)

With US coins I found PCGS better than their competitor.

I think restoration should really be reserved for true issues like PVC vs. often a misguided attempt to improve an otherwise wholesome coin. If you dont like the appearance of a coin just sell it vs. monkeying with it under the guise of a professional restoration that isn’t really even warranted.

It's pretty easy to see the benefit in terms of grade.
Going from a body bag to a 65, or a 64 to a 68, can be huge dollars.
    If you're a dealer, it's a no brainer.
But even if you're a collector concerned for the longevity of a piece with PVC, it seems a small sacrifice: Removing a few charisma points in order to stabilize a coin for another hundred years? I think I'd do it in most cases.
Remember, we have the hindsight of knowing what the piece looks like after. You never know before how it will turn out. It might come out looking amazing.

But I just haven’t seen the jump up in the grade like this. It looks like a different coin! What’s the point if they just fix it up to whatever grade. 🤨

Thanks for posting the images. It's good to see the differences.

  • I'm surprised they restored the first coin. It's hard to see much that needs removing.

The Chinese coin went from original to now looking like it's been cleaned.

I like the gold coins before restoration better.

I agree, I would not be real happy with the Chinese coin(first). I see a little difference but not worth the price of S/H and fees, to me. I have only had one coin restored and it was a proof and done by NGC.
The gold sounds great from the advance in grades, but the photos not even close. Can you post your photos of the coins when you get them?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Are we saying a bit of negative toning moved the assigned grade from 68 to 64? That doesn't seem right.

If I could get a 4-point grade jump, I'd send all my coins in right now.

It is not the toning they removed but the haze they removed. It looks much better after the restoration.

Some of the coins look better, but the spread in the before/after grades seems pretty extreme.
