2021 was a milestone year for my collecting journey. I consolidated to pursue a single type set, got some amazing coins, grew my network of fellow collectors and dealers, and learned a lot along the way. Though the hunt has been frustrating at times, I've really been enjoying the hobby this year.

So I wanted to share my progress w/the forum. I am pursuing a full US gold type set. This is a long term goal. Some coins might be out of reach financially, but I have a lot of collecting "runway" ahead so who knows.

And here are some highlights for the year. My first big purchase of 2021, which set me on this course, was this 1801 $10 which I've posted a bunch.

Now hooked on early gold, through some trading I ended up with this amazing companion 1802/1 Draped Bust $5:

And just recently I managed to snag this amazing 1838 Classic Head $5.

I don't think I'll be able to beat this trio in 2022, but hope to add a couple more coins to the set. Still a lot of empty slots to go. An 1807-1812 capped bust $5 is my next "big" target.

Agree, adds a whole other interesting story to the piece. I like this one a lot. It's a flashy piece with almost prooflike surfaces, lots of luster, bright lemon color with orange highlights, and old green holder to boot. Although I could imagine upgrading to maybe a 62 if the stars align, for now this one is a keeper!

I wanted to get some of the rarer mint marks for my type set but prices are nuts. A 1861 type 3 G$1 is $500 in mint state without the Dahlonega mint mark and $100,000 with it. I guess a CC will do.

A $3 is conspicuously absent from my set. I've been looking for decent one in 63 cac for a very long time. Have passed on a lot that I now regret passing on, as current prices are much higher and pickings much slimmer.

This is more of a hole filler than a critical element for me. I just don't get excited about the $3 like I do for some of the others.

However, I'm happy to say I might be able to stop looking. I may have a suitable newp to share by the end of the week!

I just looked online to see what the $3 coins are going for now. Holy Moly!! I am very lucky I pulled the trigger when I did because they are easily 2x what I paid.

Anyone who says there is no inflation is fooling themselves.

One day when I can work up to it, I'd love to own a nice capped bust $5 or $10 but im not at that place yet and I've got some research to do first.

Here is my last add of 2021, the elusive $3. Was holding out for a 63 but this one popped up and couldn't help myself. In hand this one is flashy, nice color and luster. Very happy with it!
