I want to say 61 due to the old holder but with the color popping though the thick tone, I suspect there is more life on there and guessed 62. Low MS for sure though IMHO

at 53, probably low but based on these pics luster looks too flat for 58 or MS

    53 obverse with a 58ish reverse, I’ll call is 53 shot 53+.

How much luster is there. I think it's got a shot for MS. I guessed 62 as well.

    It's subdued by the toning.

I love your bust half. That tobacco toning is attractive on older pieces.
I did vote XF45 only because of the wear although I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a higher grade.

Looks 55 to me but wouldn’t be surprised if got a bump to 58 for eye appeal. The luster is of course impossible to tell from the images but the surfaces look very nice from what I can tell which is why it may be a 58.

Cool - Thanks for the input. I looked at CoinFacts and did see some of the same strike issues on higher grades, maybe the colors threw me back. But now I know.
    Edit: Colors = light areas.

Those are contact patches from storage over the years from laying on its side or being pressed between something. Those spots got exposed to the elements at different rates. Notice how they are all on the same plane

All over both sides and as Crypto mentioned on the same plane. Most notably on the eagles head and wing.
Edit: I think I got the Bust confused with her Bustesses :D

I've gotta go with low MS on this one. The surfaces look pristine, but I am thinking the luster is subdued with that toning.

Debating if I wanna unveil the answer tomorrow or wait until I have CAC results. Should be no later than next Monday... So not sure on Bean status at this time.

I'd wait and reveal the hard cold facts next week, but regardless like others have stated, this is one cool GTG with such a diverse range of grades.

It won’t gold, might not even green with that toning. Unless NGC gave it an AU for the toning

For those guessing xf45-au53, sometimes the holder is a clue. What would have been the point submitting a common date bust half to TPG in clearly in a common grade back then? Food for thought

It's still higher grade then what was usually seen in coin shops back then... I recall being in some shops in the mid to late 80's and 1/3 to 1/2 the glass inventory cases were low grade CBH's.

AU 55 because NGC liked that dark toning back in the old days, but I think the coin would be considered too dark today and the two-tone nature of it makes me suspicious that it's not natural

It might have continued to tone deepening in the holder over the years from the slab label?

Might have to wait til Tuesday, folks... I'll try to post the grade Sunday night then immediately do the "guess the CAC" thread. Let that run until Tuesday AM.

I'm not really sure why posting the grade has to be done on CAC's schedule, but whatever.

    XF45

I am of two minds on this coin, but will commit to one grade.

One part of me wants to give it EF45 because there is what I consider obvious wear patterns on both sides and the luster appears to be muted, muted, muted to the point of burnt away. Additionally, if this is an old NGC holder then their circulated standards for this series were likely a little tighter than we see at either NGC or PCGS today. Combined, that would be a close definition for EF45.

The other part of me thinks the coin would have graded AU50 and likely because it might not have been so dark at the time of grading. However, I will be one of the "bad guys" and vote EF45.
