What causes this on the coin?

    Possibly a cleaning agent or machine oil. That's unfortunate.

    Looks almost like a weld mark if you’re TIG welding. Maybe a mint employee accidentally got oil got on the planchet before it was stamped and the pressure caused it to burn in place.

    If it spreads (blue) it might be worth a premium.

    Looks like a spot of toning, I doubt it will affect the grade, maybe keep it from a 70 is about it...

    I don't believe that that is a US Mint product. Get it graded. A lot of people like me will think it's a fake. Too many problems with it.

    Some of my non-silver coins got that toning when I cleaned them with Bar Keeper's Friend powder

    If this happened at the mint, is this a case of 'mint error, but can't be proved as such'?

    For a modern coin that is a serious problem. It will be difficult sell so grade means nothing IMO. A proper question is can you send it back and get replacement or refund. Why would somebody waste money sending it in for grading? Unbelievable.

    I don’t like garbage that is stained / spotted like that whether classic or mod. Don’t care if they have his little sticker on it either or some fancy grade on holder.

    My advice - buy sight seen at show or eBay where you at least have pic plus return option. Tuition can be harsh otherwise.

    While I tend to agree, I wouldn't make that blanket statement...

    @Defi_Lama I can't believe you cleaned a coin with a Bar Keep product! Cleaning a coin is a No-No, and then using Bar Keep. Tell me this was a one time thing! Why not use a buffer to shine it too.
