In a continuing effort to slim down my collection, I am selling another group of the Mexican minors in the Stacks Bowers October internet-only sale. I have been collecting these for 25 years and many are from previous great collections (not generally noted by Stacks). I will add some commentary next to each lot here where applicable. Most are comically underestimated and miscatalogued by Stacks. :o

If you are the least bit interested, please have a look. And if something strikes your fancy, make a bid! As of now, there are still many lots without any bids.

In case you don't know, Len Novotny assembled the finest and most complete collection of Mexican minors ever formed. It was mostly sold by Stacks in various sales in 2011. Many of the coins below come from his collection. I also purchased coins from the collection of Bill Porter. He was very quality-conscious and mainly purchased from Mike Dunigan, but occasionally from Dave Amey and others.

Thanks @Abuelo. Maybe they will be ex. Abuelo Collection one day!

I think it is possible some of these will be... but are too many. The 4 reales group is really outstanding. And the decimals, well, what can I say. Too bad one never have enough funds! Best of luck!

How does one follow the live auction once it starts like Heritage never bid with them before?

You need to hunt around on their homepage on auction day. October 13 at noon Eastern. Somewhere they will have a LIVE button and you just click it and the auction comes up. You need to register with Stacks ahead of time because, unlike Heritage, they have a credit limit.

I am registered bid on a few already. I will call them Monday about the credit limit but I doubt so far there is any issue at all with that. I will make sure all is OK before bidding any further it should be.

@Abuelo and whomever else cares..... Stacks will allow you to take a few months to pay for a small fee. I think maybe 1% a month on the balance. It's not exorbitant and it's not publicized.

It's certainly an option if short on funds. I've used it on occasion if I catch a bout of "irrational exuberance."

If any of the items it is not sold, will end up avail on the Buy Direct on SBG?

To answer to mysef, I can see they have a 'Buy Direct' section, but guess that these type of coins won't be there too often if ever happens. Was just curios.

If anything doesn't sell, it goes back to my collection! :)

Edited to add: They made the estimates and opening bids low enough that everything should sell IMHO.

@ELuis two of my coins failed to get any bids and hence didn’t sell. I’m happy to receive offers (and no auction commission!).

71526 MEXICO. Real, 1868-Ho PR. Hermosillo Mint. NGC VF-30. Ex. Novotny Collection (privately). Opening bid was $120 (+20% buyers premium). Estimate $200-300.

Both over-mintmark coins: the Pi being Pi/Zs.

    Happy with the prices?

  • pruebaspruebas Posts: 4,302 ✭✭✭✭✭

The prices were ok. I didn’t expect much, so it’s kinda what I thought.

People keep saying the prices were crazy, but that’s only if you believe the low estimates were close to reality. Of course, they weren’t. The estimates were pure fiction. Totally made up.

I would caution everyone not to expect much from minors of any field of coins, even after a long holding period. Mexican numismatics is a popular field, but even in this market, I had trouble getting back my cost basis in these coins, especially after slabbing costs.
