Newp / gtg - 1889 gold dollar

My local dealer had this coin earlier in the summer and I chewed on it but passed because I needed the $$ for other priorities. Visited yesterday and it was somehow still in the case, so I decided to make it happen. Puts a dent in my budget for an early $5, but a worthy pickup for my type set. I really like it. This isn't one of those GTGs where you have to guess if it is AU or MS so maybe a little easier. I'll make it self-lookup and just post the cert number for those who want to test their skills.
Now I just need a $3 to finish the 12 piece type set.

I have to go with High MS on that one. Beautiful coin and worthy of a type set. I still need the Ty2 and Ty3 for my full gold type set. That's the exact grade of coin I am looking for.

Very nice! I have one in 64+ and that one looks a bit nicer. Before I look it up, I’ll say 66.
Don’t know why but I really enjoy these little dollars.
Edit: looked now, nice!!!
I'll guess 65

I want to say 65+. That cheek hit isn’t bad but is in the wrong spot

I’m not very good at grading these so I looked it up. My guess wasn’t far off though.
Very nice addition Chris!

High MS. 66 Maybe better. The cheek ding is the only thing I see that could hold it back.
64 in the olden days of the grading giants, 65+ today.

That is one seriously pretty coin.

That is a very nice gold coin... my gut says around 67... maybe 66... I get excited over nice gold coins and tend to over estimate... sorta 'Blinded by the light'.... Cheers, RickO
IMO in the olden days this would never be considered less than 66.
Clean and frosty. 65. Maybe 66.
I can't see this under MS66.
Edited to add, I just looked up the cert number. These must've been saved or an original source of them surfaced at some point. Hard to believe there are 30 in that grade with 15 higher.

It looks like a PCGS MS67 I owned a few years ago.
In my head I thought 66+ Cac before I looked up the cert. Gorgeous coin!

The coin is graded 67+ CAC. Sorry I didnt grab a slab shot yet.
Looks amazing in hand and in the pictures IMHO. Hard to see what knocked it down for many of you!

My guess is the cheek, or at least how the cheek appears in the TV

My guess is the mark on the face.

The grade has already been revealed to be 67+ CAC. If I were the OP, and I had already revealed a grade like that, I can’t say that I wouldn’t feel a little insulted if someone proceeded to say they thought it was a 64 after the fact. I understand grading is subjective but sheesh, that is an exceptional looking coin IMO.

Many choose not to read the comments before guessing so they are not influenced by others’ opinions, and OP also did not put revealed in the title or original post which is customary once a grade is revealed.

Wow... I grade it that! ;-)

Agree and 67+CAC is an incredibly high standard.
I think it comes down to whether the person viewing the coin consider the marks on the cheek, eyebrow, nose and field in front of the lip "minor imperfections".
It is virtually flawless except for the unfortunate mark under the eye of Ms. Liberty. That limits it to MS-64 because of the location.
These coins are so small that the marks are really exaggerated in pictures and are tiny. Nice coin!

I was going to guess 66+ but I see I’d still be wrong. I’ll bet that’s a little luster bomb in hand.
Congratulations on such a nice addition 👌
MS66 is my guess. Going to check now...

I would have guessed 66 as it appears to be enormously lustrous. The stated grade doesn't bother me, as the cheek mark may or may not be as significant in person. Sometimes the light just catches it wrong.
