question on submission

3stars3stars Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a 1970D quarter on dime stock - would that be submitted under economy or mint error?

Previous transactions: Wondercoin, goldman86, dmarks, Type2

    Mint error is what you want. With an error that obvious they won’t grade it under economy anyway most likely.

    Per this PCGS article, they consider the use of an incorrect planchet to be an error.

    Is an incorrect submission type considered an error?

    That’s too bad, $65 fee is probably more than the coin is worth

    @3stars

    Your coin has an interesting backstory.

    Thanks for asking about it. I learned something new. :)

    Interesting find... I looked for these for a while... no luck... then forgot about them. I guess I should check my 'quarter jar' - about a quart and a half of quarters from pocket change. Cheers, RickO

    Yes, one that costs a lot of unnecessary time.

    I doubt that. And it still depends upon the condition of the coin which we don’t have a picture of.

    It's generally a $100 coin in grades of AU or less. Fairly common error. $65+ to encase a $100 coin is a bit prohibitive.

    What if it’s MS and not AU or less? We don’t know. In any case, it all depends on what the person’s motivation for encapsulation are.

    The coin is at best XF, so no real upside at that grading fee. For an economy fee of $22, I would have done it.

    Could be. But you said that you "doubt that" to the question of whether the fee was more than the coin was worth. There was no reason to either endorse or doubt that supposition. But they are, perhaps, more common than you thought.

    They are more common than I thought for that specific quarter. I read the article linked to further up to understand that.
