GTG - 1800 Draped Bust Half Dime - GRADE POSTED

I've only purchased a few coins in the last couple of years, and this DBHD is by far the most significant. Would be interested in the forum's thoughts on the coin, as well as guesses on the grade assigned by PCGS. Thanks in advance. Grade posted toward end of thread.

lovely coin.
i'll go au50 can't tell about luster.
that has got to be the scriptiest script 8 in all of usa numismatics!
Bust coinage is notoriously hard to grade, especially from photos. That said, no one is particularly close so far.
EDIT: The coin has very nice luster, best seen when viewed at an angle.

I'll go net AU55 (light strike) -

AU55 That's awesome whatever it graded!

53 CAC - very nice!
58 CAC; not sure if there is any actual wear but looks like maybe the slightest traces of cabinet friction on the high points. Awesome coin!
AU50 CAC
Hard to imagine it being MS as I would have agreed at 50-53. Regardless, beautiful coin.

The coin is getting more valuable all the time... or maybe it's just gradeflation in action!
Sorry, I had to post “LOL.” I own an MS-64 graded example of an 1800 half dime. If that is an MS-64, my coin is an MS-67.
Please feel free to post it here.

Beautiful piece regardless of the grade. AU55 is my guess.
My guess is PCGS was harsh and called it a 40. That's a stellar coin no matter what grade it got.

Either it's a 58 or maybe a 63. Grade shouldn't matter , it's a beauty

I love it. 58
58 but low ms wouldn’t surprise me.
Please try to be respectful in gtg threads as not everyone here has been collecting since these coins were struck.
Here is her sister. On your coin the hair did not strike up but the reverse eagle did. On my coin the hair struck up but not the eagle.
I now think yours is likely in an unc holder. Beautiful coin. Want to trade?

Very nice example there, @fishteeth ! I think part of the charm of these early US coins is precisely their unique imperfections.

Well... Guesses covering the spectrum... So I will add... XF40...Cheers, RickO
I want to see that! Post is here or in my Friday thread.

OK, I'll put you down for AU55 (netted 15 points for "heavy tarnish").
Here is a third example. I think mine and fishteeths coin were struck close to the same time. PCGS 40 OGH

Here is my piece, which is graded MS-64.
Here the piece I traded in to get the MS-64. NGC graded this one EF-40. The while balance is off, but you can get the idea about the sharpness.
Here is a "LIBEKTY" variety that NGC probably net graded for scratches. It's an AU by mint luster, but it has marks. NGC called EF-45. The flat spot by the eagle's beak is a die injury that is common to this die variety.
@BillJones Very sharp coin, that 64! Thanks for sharing. The others aren't terrible, either. People who guessed my coin is XF should really do a critical comparison with the ones you just posted above.
Yes, most of the guesses are probably too low. I'll try 61, and say it looks like a lovely original coin with no significant wear and only minor strike weakness at the highest points of the design. Lovely coin and very tough this nice.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the thread. I purchased this coin from Paradime Coins sometime last year, and can highly recommend them as a dealer based on that experience. As many of you probably know, I love thick, original skin on old silver coins, so it took me about five seconds to decide to pull the trigger on this one. It was a bit of stretch financially, but I'm definitely into quality over quantity these days.
Apparently, folks underestimated the coin's grade based on a weakish strike and lack of hair detail. In hand, it's clearly UNC with unbroken luster. If it had a better strike, I'd consider it unimprovable (for my taste), but it would also cost about twice as much! I'm delighted to own it as is.
Yea, I thought it looked unc. but the large hit under the ribbon would hold it to a 62. Anyways just a guess
Edit: Maybe that's just color and not a hit?
Very very nice!!
Just looked at the field under the ribbon with a 10x loupe. It's a V-shaped die crack.
I predict one day this will be an AU64
