I got bored

I got bored today. So I went out and bought something I have never owned. A coin folder and I put extra gem Roosevelt dimes in it. I wasn't sure how to get them in the folder without leaving a fingerprint on them so I got some cotton gloves and put them in. Looks nice so far.

I had several Dansco albums but the only one I completed was the FE/Indian cent album.
I also had Lincolns, Mercury dimes and Jefferson nickels, I forgot that I did complete the Jeffersons in MS 65 up to 1985.
I started serious collecting in about 1973 when I got my first serious job.

@Raybo in 1975 I was only 9 yrs old so no serious job or serious coins at that point.

Actually I was just wondering what brand. Mine that’s coming is a gift and hopefully it won’t be made of bad paper. I don’t think my new one is the kind that shows both sides. 🤠

I’m surprised you wrote in all those dates without one screw up. Oops just noticed your very first 4 in 46 looks like you screwed that up. Guess that got you to focus. And your very last 4 in 64D....almost made it.

Albums are great... I like the ones where both sides can be viewed... but have both types. I do not believe I ever completed any of them :D Last time I looked at one was about two years ago...maybe three. Yours looks nice, good luck completing it. Cheers, RickO

Looks like a fun project and thanks for posting it.

I was bored yesterday too. I tried to visit a local coin store that I had not been to since Pre-COVID. Internet showed open. From past experience I knew he did not answer the phone so I headed there only to find it was closed. Sign on door showed Saturday hours but something must have come up Maybe another day.

There is a difference between albums and folders. Coin albums (Dansco. Whitman, etc...) have both sides visible and kept in place with plastic insert sleeves. Coin folders (Whitman, Littleton Warman, etc...) only show one side.

I've always enjoyed filling holes in albums. I buy old folders at yard sales and flea markets if they're cheap enough and try to fill them with coins I have on hand. I once found a whole box of blue Whitman folders at a flea market marked 25 cents each. The dealer counted them up at 48 and they were mine for $12.00. When I got them home I discovered 12 silver Roosevelts in one of them. Since silver was bringing 10x face at the time, I pretty much got my folders for free.

Oh I forgot to ask, does anybody know if this floder is safe for the coins or will they be pitch black in a few years?

Your post awoke a memory for me.
I still have my 2 original Whitman Lincoln Cent folders from my childhood with the coins in them.
As most of us, the key dates are missing.
I do have a complete set of Lincolns in several Capital holders.
    Thanks.

Depends on the environment. I have a few Whitmans that my father put together in the 60s and while the coins have certainly darkened in the 40 years since I first found them they aren't bad. The only coin that looks really black is one I remember trying to shine up with steel wool as a kid.

When I was starting out collecting, I used folders.

I had some bad experiences. The coins would either slip down between the cardboard, on the folders that you can see the coin from both sides.

Or, on the folders where just one side of the coin was visible, they would fall out of the hole that they were pressed into.

I bought some Roosevelt dimes for melt once that came in the blue cardboard Whitman folder. The backs of most of them had some kind of dark stripes on them, caused by reaction to the folder.

I have a complete set of Roosevelt Dimes and Washington Quarters that I have in the Capital holders. They are readily visible, and you do not have to worry about environmental damage from long term storage.

Most of my sets, as well as my other coins that are not in individual holders or slabs, I store in plastic tubes.

The Lovely Mrs. Hydrant had a policy when the 4 Hydrant boys were growing up here on the ranch........there was a forbidden word......BORED. If any of the boys said, "I'm bored.".... then she kicked them out of the house and told them to, " Go pick up rocks and don't come back until dark." The boys joke about it to this day. The interesting part now is that when visitors see the rock walls around here they think that they are ancient Indian ruins. God....those boys picked up some big rocks....really big.

Actually, The Lovely Mrs. Hydrant had two forbidden words.....bored and sucks.....as in "that sucks." But.......the "S" word was never used by the boys. They knew better than to cross Mom on that one! 🙅 🏏💥!

She had those two forbidden words. That put a stop to even thinking about anything else. Wise woman. To this day none of the boys cuss......except for saying G.D. But that's a Hydrant man tradition that goes way back. Not even The Lovely Mrs. Hydrant could stop that and wisely....wouldn't try. Some things are just the way they are. 🤷

Coin albums are the best, I miss the days when albums were all we had.

Albums aren't cheap anymore. I can remember walking in to coin shops (1960's-1980's) and they had so many used albums and folders that they would always be cheap or even give-aways. Not any more. In the early 1960's one of the hobby shops sold the blue Whitman folders for 23 cents each,-brand new! In the retail stores they were 69-89 cents.
