Do I have the SUPER rare PCGS holder? Another OGH Franklin
Hi guys, just picked this. All because of the beautiful PCGS old school holder. It appears to be the 3.0 Generation one? However, on the obverse our host's name is missing above the grade where normally it should be? What do you guys make of this? Thank You!
Here is the PCGS Museum of holders 3.0 Gen picture

The four points makes it look 2.2

Don't think it is a GEN 3.0. You have alignment pins.
Maybe a GEN 2.1. Label appears to be perforated, and it is missing the "PCGS" at the top of the label.

Since it has a perforated label, I'd call it a 2.1. Getting harder to find but not especially rare.

Oh thanks guys! So it's even earlier than first thought, huh? Pretty cool. I did notice the "4 pins", but since the label appearance? Yeah, no PCGS above.
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

Thanks
I paid $60. Good price?

Thanks for the info.

is this old?

The rattler is the original PCGS holder
Can't tell for sure from the image.
Looks to be a GEN 1.0 - 1.2

I would say these are the rarer holders:
but should my rattler give a significant premium to an otherwise unexceptional coin?

NGC does not have a resource for this like PCGS does. However this thread ats was put together by conder101 and has the early generations listed for NGC.

Rattlers are somewhat common so not much premium automatically attached.

Good, because I'd like to be able to admire or trade the coin without being distracted.
I thought the attraction for rattlers was the grading standards were different early on so some give up the rattler at a chance for an upgrade

... of course, if you own the rattler, you can automatically assume it is graded 1-2 points lower than modern pcgs slabs.
Some collect the plastic some collect the coin. Rgds!

I heard that both are HOT right now! The potential upgrade and the old school holders. This is the whole reason I bought this today! Lol

This slab style was used from 1986 to1989. Check the PCGS Coin Facts web site for a lot of useful information. They have a photo gallery of the various slab styles.

It is a little dated, but CoinWeek ran an article about desirable holders back in 2018.
For some reason, I am unable to post the link.
If you are interested, your GEN 2.1 is #7. Just google: "Buy the Holder, Not the Coin – 10 Certification Slabs to Look For"

That's the Conder101 2.0 version; the most common of the "double" holders. It's about as rare as a mosquito.
@pointfivezero
Thanks.
@MetroD it looks to be GEN1.2 Light Green label, no PCGS.
Those mosquito slabs are wicked rare!
... It's about as rare as a mosquito.
How 'bout a mosquito in Chicago in January? Now, that's rare! Lol

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Well, I wouldn't be that harsh - it's becoming a fairly scarce holder. Agree - what we used to call the 2.0 holder. Especially rare in the Doily version!
Just an OGH.
One of these days, I will have to sit down and pull out my slabs and check for these old holders. Not really an interest of mine, but some I purchased years and years ago, so might have a special one. Not likely, but will check - some cold, snowy winter day. Cheers, RickO
I like the old holders, as long as the coin is nice of course but they add a little interest to the history of coin grading.

Is there anyplace one could find what these holders are valued at other than just searching through all past auction sites for them? As most auctions do not label these holders as to gen, it would be a major undertaking to search through them all. Just curious as to whether their might be a website or even a dealer that specializes in these?

Here's another
Is this even an earlier gen.?

No Bar Code = GEN 1.0 - GEN 1.2
Based on the image, the label does not appear to be white.
If correct, that would make it a GEN 1.2.
