Matte Proof Lincoln Newp

Just getting around to photographing my ANA show newps. Got this from Angel Dee's to keep the 1913 I bought from them a year ago company. Also got a book from Carl Waltz about the diagnostics of all the matte proof Lincolns.

It is great that you appreciate the MPLs. Your coin is very attractive. I like the uniform surfaces and eye appeal. I have a complete set of Matte Proof Lincolns. The pics are in the registry set under the name Veronica.

I was not aware of that book. I only got one hit for it on the web "The book can be purchased for $30.00 from book dealer John H. Burns at your local coin show or by contacting him via the internet at johnhburns@comcast.net. It is also available from the author postage paid for $35.00. The address is Carl Waltz, PO Box 62, Millersville, PA 17551." I will certainly order it. My current reference is the popular book by Kevin Flynn.

I have found that with a good quality digital scope you can get detailed close up pictures of the die diagnostics for your coins through the plastic. Even if you have no equipment, if there is a TrueView image and you download the high resolution version of the image using the following URL:

(replace the xxxxxxxx with your cert number, the file size will be about 12Meg)

You can zoom in and get a great image. The trick is to convert the picture to grayscale so you get rid of the color effects and focus on the die markers. Attached is a pic of one of the markers for the late die state on the reverse of my VDB coin using this technique.

I haven't looked at enough PR67BN matte proofs to answer with a lot of confidence, but that's a grade reserved for the best of the best. There are a couple minor spots on the obverse of this coin that aren't too noticeable, but they're there. Also, there are no iridescent colors on this one, just a lustrous brown with a little bit of red remaining. My guess is that with either no spots or pretty colors, this is a 66, with no spots and pretty colors, it's a 67.

I too, love the reverse of the OP's coin. I'll go so far as to say Victor D. Brenner's wheat cent design is the best design of them all and that includes considering the Indian or Buffalo nickel, a great design as well. Even well-worn "wheaties" are still true to the original design, a trueness akin to what we see in loss of details from wear on the Barber coinage. I recently bought a 1915 cent as a business strike that appears to me to be a very lightly circulated proof. Amazing to me is that the wear seen, being ever so slight as it is, is plainly evident on inspection with a 10x loupe.

Aesthetically, the Lincoln/wheat ears design by Brenner is a masterpiece, in my opinion.I think I'll spend some time at next show hunting for early Lincoln proofs.

I own a 1910 and a 1912. Slowly working on the set, but the 09 VDB will probably always be out of reach for me.

I have Kevin Flynn's book on MPLs and I like it quite a bit. I will have to look into the Carl Waltz book as well.

@messydesk What lighting did you use for your photos of this MPL? I find this type of toning very difficult to capture. My 09 S/S has a similar look and I struggled for ever to get a decent shot of it. I finally sent it off to Mark who was able to do it justice.

Nice coin.
I agree that Carl Waltz' book is very helpful--very nice color images. Good if you are looking for die markers.
Kevin Flynn's book also has lots of photos (mostly B&W), showing die markers. His book has a lot of helpful background information not in Carl's book. Flynn's book also has discussions of characteristics of business strikes vs. MPL strikes for each of the years 1909 through 1916, as well as a page devoted to Bigfoot (1917 MPL).
Serious MPL collectors should get both books.

Two daylight LED bulbs in gooseneck desk lamps, which is my usual setup. One was higher than the other, both pretty tight in on the coin. I use a 200mm macro lens, so I still had close to a foot of working distance between the coin and the front of the lens. I'm quite satisfied with the way it turned out.
