ANA NoShow Newps

HI Folks,
Well I did not get to go to ANA, opted out bc of Delta (not the airline). Probably made the right call for health but gosh there were some amazing, no, many amazing coins I missed.. The barndog half dimes at the Perkins table I was dyin' to see, then we had the 33 DE at GC, and Tyrant displayin' for heavens sake. Missed it all. So I felt sorry for myself. What better way to make oneself feel better than to go ona shopping spree while you wait for the next EB?
So I did, online and all of that. 3 on ebay including venturing into something new, and 1 from GC. Let's get them shown here.
First up, my GC acquisition. This is a lovely O-mint barber quarter in OGH. Although a 62, IMO the reverse is clearly 64 or 65. Nary a hit or hairline (well ok just a couple), the obverse the same. The reverse has vibrant flashy luster worthy of the mid MS grades. I think this coin got the grade for the obverse. Although clean surfaces, the luster is worthy of a 62, or depending on the day, 58 (one person's 62 can be another's 58 and vice versa) - how the cheek is interpreted is the key for grade for this one. The GC images were accurate so I knew that going in. Lawrence says this issue is 'fairly nice for an O-mint', 'underrated in AU and above'. This example shows pretty good strike, but some weaknesses, for example on the arrow shafts and feathers. Overall I like the surfaces and am happy to have won it.
Will it CAC? I will give it 50:50 - CAC has stickered 35 of these with green beans, one in 62, 13 higher. So middle of the road for BQ's. I will say though that I have 62's quarters in older series with less luster and what may be a slight rub that have beans on their slabs. So we will see.
Next up is new territory. I always wanted to buy an Standing Liberty Quarter and from JH Cline himself. He was such a nice person to talk to on the bourse. They always seemed kind of newish to me, but I love the design. So I saw this one on ebay and pulled the trigger. There are scads of these beaned (188 including 25 in 58 for the FH, only 66 total for all grades in noFH), so common, but hey what a lovely coin. The FH means it is struck up well, but the 1917's mostly seem to be not too expensive to get one well struck and most of them seem to grade FH. I don't know much more about it for now, but I have Cline's book and plan to learn more. Will I venture into this series? Probably not, but now I have 1 to enjoy.
Last, 2 barber halves, both from our own coinpaesan.
First is this 1899-S with great toning on the rims. The type of coin that was cleaned long ago, sat in an album for who knows how long and toned up. I love the look and am a sucker for it every time. 26 of these have got the bean and only 1 in 55, this one, 1 in 58, then 11 in MS starting at 64. So if you want a nice beaned AU coin, well, this one is almost it.
Second BH is an 1912-D in OGH. I love the surfaces on this coin, one of my favorite looks. And I can't find a hairline anywhere under the loop, some minor hits but otherwise just a gorgeous example. 1912-D's are much more common beaned (107) than the 1899-S, including 9 in 55 and 9 in 58, and 67 in MS grades(!). But how many of these are OGH with surfaces untouched for decades? Not all of them and probably only a few.
In conclusion, these coins fall within my secondary collecting goals, I pickup great halves when I can, I do want a complete set of barber quarters (this is my second 03-O the other in VF), and I am happy to have one SLQ. But with all secondaries, I get them when they are really great coins and I think these fit that.
Best, SH

@spacehayduke , GREAT pickups! My favorites are the final three, but even the 1903-O Barber Quarter is wonderful!

Great pickups!
Pretty group. I like them all.
Thanks for pointing out, I have templates set up in Photoshop and sometimes I miss modifications needed. I will get that fixed.
Folks thanks for the kind words. Happy searching...
Best, Al
Congrats on your new pieces, SH!
I am a little surprised at the bean on the 99', not because of the grade, but to the prior cleaning (that you've acknowledged). Shows what I don't know about CAC! Still a lovely coin, regardless of sticker status.

Thanks for the kind words to all! CB, cleaning has various levels. QDB has continuously pointed out that nearly all numismatic coins have been cleaned. So then, with that in mind, each coin is a judgement call as to what has been done to it and how it has affected the coin. Who knows, maybe the 99-S was never cleaned and CAC knows better than me. But having seen alotta beaned coins with that look and I think that look was a 'gentle' cleaning with retoning and as long as it has not impeded luster (i.e. drab surfaces) it seems to frequently be ok with CAC.
