Today at the ANA

Went there today to catch up with a few people I know, see the show, see the exhibits and generally just talk coins. Since all the covid business prevented shows the last year and a half the first thing I did was renew my ANA membership ($30) because it's just the right thing to do compared to paying the $10 daily entry.
Upon arrival fairly early (it had just begun to thunder and rain) I reviewed the program to understand where the Dealers I wanted to see were located. This show is roughly 4 football fields in total floorspace so seeing everything in a day is impossible.
I suppose table cost requires Dealers to bring the cream of their crop because there was a boatload of premium coins to consider, very little cheap dreck like stuff. As expected, those coins that were priced in a Dealers case gave me pause. I find it exceptionally hard to buy at shows because I simply won't pay full price however, tomorrow I need to source a couple generic Franklins to replace some going to the grading room.
Took a little time out to review The Tyrant Collection. This is the most valuable private collection ever assembled. It encompasses everything from half cents, large and small cents, Nickels, Dimes, quarters, Bust coins of all denominations, dollars and more. The highlights of this terrific collection are the King of Siam Set, some of the finest bust coinage ever created and the top of the top gold.
It's beyond words the dedication to perfection necessary to assemble such a fine group of coins. Beyond the money necessary, it's clear that someone dedicated an enormous amount of effort and years to assemble such a fine collection.
Tomorrow I'm going to create a couple of submissions and do it all again. I don't know that I'll have the energy to return Friday unless it's for something specific. That's the perks of living just a few miles away.

Nice report! Thank you for sharing!
Hundreds of flights into Chicago have been cancelled this week due to weather. I wonder if that affected attendance much?

Thanks for the encouraging report. I'll be heading out tomorrow and Friday. Putting my hiking shoes on! 4 football fields? Maybe I'll need my cleats?

Thanks for the report.... Sounds like a great show with really good attendance. The Tyrant collection certainly has amazing coins. I am really glad it gets displayed at the large shows. Cheers, RickO

Went back yesterday to make 2 additional submissions to the one I gave PCGS at their Members only Show in Las Vegas. Funny how you can go for six months with nothing then get a bug to submit 25 coins in 3 groups in a short period of time.
I attended with a friend who had a number of specific questions about specific coins and tokens. He seemed very pleased with the quality (and ease) of info provided. The Dealers seemed to be happy to help. There was deal making going on at almost every table, that's good but also bothersome to buyers.
I'm a very firm believer in the idea that you have to sell some things to truly know where you're at as a buyer. Without specifics let's just say the offers were roughly a third of retail. That's sorta funny when they were selling the current Grey Sheet to the public at the show. Table costs are crazy at a show, I know, but realistic buying offers shouldn't be.
I chatted briefly with Charmy The Penny Lady at the show. She'll post my mug shot in her report, I'm sure.
Everyone I spoke with indicated that they were having a very good show, making deals for dollar amounts far in excess of past years. This might just be a reflection of current prices but it's encouraging. Stacks Bowers had previewing for their auction. I'm not certain if it's connected to this show. Normally one auction company or another has a companion auction.
Tomorrow is get away day for Dealers. It's free to enter but there won't be many left. Today is your best bet to see the show in all it's glory.
Thanks for your report.

A third of retail? What kind of things were you trying to sell? I just can't imagine anything but the most illiquid widget getting that kind of offer consistently.
Thanks for your report.
I've thought about selling (as a dealer) at a very small show. I would save the E-Bay costs as well as shipping. How many DE's do I need to sell to make the table/travel fees back?
I wonder how much I would net above what I do now? I assume everyone wants low ball prices so would I be spending time negotiating my E-bay savings away?
As Clint Eastwood would say, "A Man's got to know his limitations. Clearly I know mine. I wouldn't be bringing a very rare inventory since most of my holdings are generics. Saints 63-65. Libs 62-64. Some are rarer years but overall nothing special. I'm just annoyed that I pay $200-$300/coin in fees on E-Bay. I imagine too much competition around the bourse?
I'm just fantasizing since I'm not really prepared to bring a somewhat large amount of DE's to a show? I am mainly concerned about security? Both the coins and mine. Then again, I can save money since I have no need of a bodyguard. My wife can handle all issues. Unless... she runs into a spider.
So I will simply...Dream on.
