Idk. Pretty small number that needed to be shipped.

Took a closer look at it to see if I might have some interest in it... but like usual for me with the US Mint offerings, will just have to pass. And way too expensive for my taste. But it is good the US Mint is honoring the military with some offerings.

I fully agree it's pricey. But, compared to what? This medallion has 2.5oz of silver @$165.00 compared to most 1 oz coins issued by the US Mint ranging from $75 to $85 per oz. The 3" copper medals @ $160.

I compared it to a 5 oz unc silver coin which is selling for 229.00 right now, that's about $46 an ounce compared to $64 an ounce for a medal. And you are absolutely right, $75 to $85 and ounce also seems pricey. It's sheer silver madness I tell you!!!

    No more 5 oz ATB's. ;)

BTW I got my medal in todays mail. Convinced me to collect the series.

It will be interesting to see what the Mint prices the 1-oz. version that is being issued next year.

Probably the same $75 to $83 range they've been using this year. Assuming silver price is similar, of course.

Past experience does indicate, cu is normally a prelude to sold out. A few may become available due to cc issues, cancellations, returns or other issues.

I'm getting ready for 8/17......next in line: Coast Guard

WOW, what family history and story....That would make an incredible movie!!! Both left engines shot out and still manages to land...the mint should let you have one of these medals at no charge.

The planes took off from Benghazi, Libya and flew to Ploesti, Rumania to bomb Hitlers oil refineries. The crazy part of this mission was that it was to be at low altitude. I have all my uncles flight logs that the military kept. When I got them I wondered why when he arrived in England there were lots of training flights. As I investigated further I came across an article that talked about B-24 bombers buzzing the English countryside. Turns out they were preparing for the mission. This was June, 1943. Practicing low level flying.

In July, 1943 they moved to Benghazi, Libya. Here they launched bombing missions into Italy to support the invasion into Italy. They also practiced low level formation flying. I should add that my uncle was part of Teds Flying Circus. August 1st was Operation Tidal Wave…

When my uncle got back to his squadron in England he flew one complete mission. Then on November 13, 1943 he flew a mission over Bremen, Germany. After dropping his bombs he was returning to England and being chased by a German fighter. My uncles plane went down in the North Sea.

November 13 is my Aunts birthday. Not in 1943 though. So sad he went down in the North Sea.
I like the typed remarks: Operational Secret-Secret! It was double secret!

Except the Germans knew they were coming, the low level bombing plan was full of flaws and they lost 1/3 of the bombers!

I have the letters my uncle wrote his wife, the letters his wife wrote him and the letters that crew member wives wrote my aunt! It’s amazing the stuff I have for my uncle. His high school diploma! His various flight schools he passed….his dog tags that he wore while undergoing training, his flight wings, his 1st Lieutenant bars….even his shaving kit!
