Would you pay 39 bucks for this Mercury Dime just by going by the Pictures? My Pictures in OP.

Honestly, no. Not at that price. I looked and I didn’t see anything that jumped out at me.

Yeah, I might. It's got a good look, and seems pretty accurate for the garde. Hard to tell, but ...

And then, if we're looking at the same thing ... well, if it's there ... holy cra* batman. I'm thinking it's a just miss, but keep us in the loop if you go (or already went)..

In PCGS MS-66 it was about a $20 coin at least until recently, unless the toning adds a premium.

FS-101 maybe? Or it might just be pull away toning on the 9

Can't tell the band completeness by those pics, but if complete. WOW!

I just don’t think it’s FSB. I also don’t think ANACS would miss it. Other variety types I don’t know much about.

If it was FB then it's a conditional rarity worth alot of money. But just a 66 is a pretty common graded coin and around $30 give or take a few dollars.

EDIT: And no, I can't see anything to make a difference from the supplied pictures.

    Not really.

It looks like a coin where the toning looks better under good lighting. It has a lot of luster coming through and a good strike. I'm not 100% on it being FB based on the photo. If I were building a toned set at $39 I personally would go for.

I would have to see in hand to determine. The bands look pretty full, but hard to tell in the photo.

I say no. Too many good looking 66s in PCGS/NGC holders available to view in hand and pay much less than $39 for.
If it was in hand and special, maybe. Just from those pics, I would not.

I think I would. The color might be much nicer in hand and it looks like it has good bands detail.

    No.

It is a 45P that does not have FB and you can't see if it is the DDO and the toning is neutral...and by neutral I would prefer an all white example. I own a couple of the 1945 FS-101 DDOs and from these photos there is no way to tell since the FS-101 is very minor, even though it is in the CPG.

Even with partially split bands it would be worth owning, in my opinion. I attended a Mercury dime seminar at one of the Winter FUN shows a number of years ago and the presenter said that a 1945 with even partial bands was desirable.

If I was a full band collector... would certainly be giving this some consideration. Though doesn't quite make the full bands, it's is about as good as you can get with the date?

But I don't collect full bands, so I guess my answer tot he OP's question would be no.

Probably not... Though the letters in DIME look as if they could be DDR, but very minor... Would need in hand examination to determine. Cheers, RickO

Nice bands for the money. I would never EVER pay FB money so this would be a wonderful alternative. I don’t know enough about it if it could get FB on another day.

    Not for me.

Not FS-101 or FB, but there does look like doubling on some of the letters of LIBERTY.

Based on the new pics what I saw was an artifact. It does have nice bands for the issue but still not FB. The price is not awful. Given the bands, you could get your money back from it.

Easily worth the money. Close to FSB.

I would. Not full bands but the strong strike deserves a premium.

Nice pickup Ken ... at least IMO. Wonderful strike for a '45.

Near miss FB, as it appeared, but just barely. Nice color and wholesome original look too. <3

    Man, tough crowd here.
This is a blown up seller picture, bands like this on a 45-P I'd easily pay $40 for. I find the toning slightly negative but that's not a deal breaker for me. Looks like the luster is decent under it.

    Hi Ken,

I think it's a just miss, but still a great strike for the date & good luster. I'd probably crack it out & put it in my Dansco dime album.

I cannot judge that coin with those pics. I do however think it’s nicer than the pics let on. If that’s any help 🤪

Well worth $39. These things go for a crazy amount of money in FB. Looks close, worth a premium.

  • messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,312 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hang on to it for when strike designations become more than just full and not full. It has a good strike for a 45, but not a full strike. $39 could be worse spent than on that coin.

You left out a smiley on this one.. If it's an acerbic comment on designation/flation, I'd agree. If you think this is a possibility in the future, please study the other 6 Signs of the Apocalypse more closely. :'(

    Well-played, sir. Well-played ;)

edited to add: I forgot which thread I was on for an instant. I was going to add that you'd have to dip it before I could offer an opinion on whether or not it's a satin proof. o:)
