Long Term Coin Storage

USSID17USSID17 Posts: 1,264 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hypothetically, say you were leaving the country for 3 to 6 years and leaving your collection with your parents. The only real instruction: Please keep them in a temperature controlled environment......no basement or attic.

Now imagine if you well, a number of albums (without the meat! :s ) in several of these Vacuum Sealer bags.

Do you think this is a feasible or smart solution to help protect the coins over the long term?

The coins should be fine. Especially if vacuum sealed.
I collect raw bronze, in Ga. with terrible humidity.
    No issues for 30 years.

I'm not sure what leaving the country has to do with it. Your long term storage solution should really be the same whether you are in the country or not. The only difference might be that no one needs to get at them for 3 to 6 years, I guess, hence the sealing? But if you currently have them in the living area of the house, they could continue to reside in the living area of the house. They won't do anything different if you are not there.

If you are looking for preservation, the vacuum seal option will be fine. If you are looking for security, then you have more research to do.... Cheers, RickO

    Vacuum sealing coins.
I have a few that I will give it a try with.

I would worry first about the four Ds:
Death, divorce, disability, drug use. Add bankruptcy and natural disasters.

Those things, and their various manifestations (addicts stealing assets for drugs) are a larger threat to your coins in your prolonged absence than anything else.

Personally, I’d be looking for space in an SDB or similar. Vacuum sealing the bags might help a bit. Intercept boxes might be something to consider.

That's quite a detailed explanation. Others should take note. Personally, I trust my parents more then a SDB. Thanks.

    That's good to know, thanks.

You're right, I probably should have just said that I will not have access to the coins for 3 to 6 years. Yes, in temperature controlled living space. Thanks.

Yes, just preservation. No, security is not a concern. Thanks.

Are you going on a mission or deployment? Either way, thank you for your service!

Is there PVC in the plastic it would be sealed in? Is food grade plastic wrap inert and PVC free?

I also live in hot and humid GA and have had coins in various SDBs for the last 45 years in safety flips and/or mylar cardboard 2X2s with no problems. I would think they would have survived as well in a climate controlled residence.
