I'm with the yep ... that's the small 8 variety. Very nice!
Cherry it?

Not sure what ?? VF ?? halves went for 25 years ago, but always good to cherry a published variety

About 25 years ago an 1812/1 small 8 in F would have been about a $70 or so retail coin. An 1812 in F would have been about a $50 coin ... so it sounds like it was way underpriced and not simply a 'cherried' variety. Nonetheless ... it's still cool.
One of the challenges of comparing the "good ole' days" pricing with today's pricing of CBHs, is that grading guidelines have changed from the 1990s. Grades assigned now for circulated coins would often be considered "overgraded" compared to the "Good ole' days."

Interesting observation Lane. I agree, many of the grades from 25 to 35 years ago are different enough from today, that most comparisons are difficult. Of course, my foray into the CBH world is much more recent than that, but I totally understand your points.
The "good ole' days" can be viewed in many different ways, depending on one's depth of perspective.
And yes, what I am guessing (because I can't see the coin, just the date) might be called a VF in details, probably would have been called more of a F in details when I first started collecting in '87.

Redbook 1987 prices:
12/1 small 8... G-$30, VG-$35, F-$60, VF-$100.
12 normal... G-$27, VG-$32, F-$37.50, VF-$60.
Years ago, Guy came in to our local coin show with one of these asking same question, but his was a large 8. about fine+
back then i couldnt afford it, so i had to pass. but one of the other dealers bought it
Always a thrill to cherry pick your own collection.... Nice find. Cheers, RickO
