1833 Capped Bust Half

Ok. Here's a 33 Capped Bust. Sadly it's scratched up on the Front. When I first got it I thought it was some type of error. The reverse side is fantastic. How bad do the scratches effect the value?

The scratches are a major, major negative. That coin is going to be a tough sell even if heavily discounted. I personally would not make an offer on it.

  • I just can't believe the front is scratched up. The eagle side just pops. If only the front was good!!

Those scratches will dramatically affect the value because of the quantity and the size of them.

Some black crud on the obverse - I imagine it used to have alot more on it hence the scratches. Cleaned coin with horrible obverse scratches will really affect the value. Although I've seen worse sell on eBay for ridiculous prices.

Very sad about the obverse because the reverse is really nice. But this coin loses all appeal due to the scratches.

Discounting the obverse, do you understand the cleaning that has taken place, which is quite evident on the reverse?

If not you need to study that carefully, because that is NOT fantastic surface quality on the reverse.

The obverse is, of course, cringe worthy.

It’s a $50 to $100 coin on an eBay $0.99 auction depending on the day of the week.

Don't worry, it's not. It's 102, the most common die marriage for the year (and one of the most common DMs for the entire series)

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

    The scratches kill its value.

The reverse is not "fantastic," it's cleaned.

You need to spend some time examining coins that are not cleaned or damaged to understand what original coins should look like. Otherwise, you will get eaten alive.

The obverse scratches are really bad.... certainly a details coin. Even the reverse scratches above the Eagles head would warrant a details grade. Too bad. Cheers, RickO
