Counterfeit. What should I do with it?

4.8 grams, lightweight base metal fake. Got my money back but I don't want to toss it. Is it useful for educational purposes?

    That would be a nice example to start a counterfeit coin collection with!

    Too bad this isn't a contemporary counterfeit. I think this fits more in the realm of forgery.

    Agree. That’s a scarce and valuable coin at that grade, so I believe it was intended to deceive collectors. It also looks to be of better quality than contemporary counterfeits I’ve seen from the same time period.

    Would PCGS slab it and note it as a counterfeit? Worth a call to find out.

    I bought this from eBay. The first thing I noticed when I got it in hand was that the edge was too square. I then proceeded to weigh it and there was no need to go further.

    I would preserve it or get it to someone who will, for two reasons.

    First, it is educational to be able to see fakes and learn from them.

    Second, there always the chance that someone could misdiagnose a coin.

    Overall look -- fake.
    Denticles wonky, IGWT "soft', not crisp.
    Best tell though is the date.
    Look at the numerals.
    They aren't even close to those on an authentic 1914 quarter.
    The reverse is slightly more convincing than the obverse.....but not by much.

    I'd keep it and use it as a discussion piece to use in comparing a legit versus a counterfeit when showing the collection to family, friends and other collectors.

    I read that ANACS has a slab just for counterfeits

    I found this on IGC slabbing counterfeit coins "for educational purposes only"

    You should probably add a mark to it stating it’s a copy if you want to keep it for educational purposes.

    I am opposed to this.

    It should be holdered as a counterfeit but not marked, in my opinion.

    I am reminded of an Ike dollar with a huge clip that some nitwit counterstamped "not a real error". The problem is that he was wrong and it was a real error.

    I am also reminded that for some years the 5th 1913 Liberty V nickel was assumed to be fake by the family that owned it. Luckily no one decided to mark it as such.

    I'm pretty sure the PCGS tag for a counterfeit has DO NOT HOLDER in big letters to make sure it doesn't accidentally get put into a holder, regardless of what may be written on the tag that indicates it as such.
