Who is the GOAT rock band?

I have to bring this up now, because it's eating away at me. I asked my wife last night who she thought was the GOAT rock band and her answer was The Rolling Stones. Is this right, are they the greatest ever, could she be right? Who is really the GOAT rock band?

I love them too, I was surprised my wife said The Rolling Stones, I always thought wives were supposed to be out of touch and not cool!

I think you nailed them all except the 80s. A group from Ireland holds that title.

You are probably right with U2 but just not my personal jam. I'm for sure in the minority on this one. Maybe The Police for me although their best work was late 70's

I would put the Police in the 70s as well. Their 80s stuff is inferior to their 70s classics.

Beatles opened the floodgates. Other great bands followed. 100 years from now musical scholars will be talking Brahms, Bach, Beethoven, Beatles. Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band when considering content, musical ability, and longevity. I went to a Stones concert in 2015. They still had great ability and performed flawlessly. Not bad for a bunch of guys 70+. BTW for those new to the forum....Hi, hello, how are ya?

Got me thinking about the 80s now. That is really a tough decade to call.

Journey, Queen, Springsteen, the Cars, Van Halen.

U2 had a tough time beating all of them except the Cars.

I think the important group of the 80s was Rush. Those three guys influenced the next generation of hard rock and rock bands.

One of my favorite guitar solos was David Gilmour's solo at the end of the Pink Floyd song "Have a Cigar" and since I can't seem to find a video of Gilmour himself playing it, here is someone covering it. I wish I could play a guitar like this.

I think U2 gets the nod for me. Massive hit records, soundtracks, movies and tours and still putting out relevant music and radio hits from every album.

And a bonus is their opening acts are typically the next big thing in music, making concerts very worth while..
