I have to bring this up now, because it's eating away at me. I asked my wife last night who she thought was the GOAT rock band and her answer was The Rolling Stones. Is this right, are they the greatest ever, could she be right? Who is really the GOAT rock band?

Rolling Stones, Guns N Roses, Pearl Jam, AC/DC are mine
For me, That little ole band from Texas, ZZ Top.
I grew up on The Rolling Stones, my father is 71 and still blasts them all the time, I love them. Tell your Wife I give her a double thumbs up Double D! 👍👍
I love them too, I was surprised my wife said The Rolling Stones, I always thought wives were supposed to be out of touch and not cool!
I'm taking the easy way out
1960's The Beatles
1970's Led Zeppelin
1980's sucked but I'll go Talking Heads
1990's Nirvana
2000's The White Stripes
Did, the thread may be closed now that this is settled

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I think you nailed them all except the 80s. A group from Ireland holds that title.
I loved the early 90’s alternative music
You are probably right with U2 but just not my personal jam. I'm for sure in the minority on this one. Maybe The Police for me although their best work was late 70's

I would put the Police in the 70s as well. Their 80s stuff is inferior to their 70s classics.
Beatles opened the floodgates. Other great bands followed. 100 years from now musical scholars will be talking Brahms, Bach, Beethoven, Beatles. Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band when considering content, musical ability, and longevity. I went to a Stones concert in 2015. They still had great ability and performed flawlessly. Not bad for a bunch of guys 70+. BTW for those new to the forum....Hi, hello, how are ya?

Got me thinking about the 80s now. That is really a tough decade to call.
Journey, Queen, Springsteen, the Cars, Van Halen.
U2 had a tough time beating all of them except the Cars.
I think the important group of the 80s was Rush. Those three guys influenced the next generation of hard rock and rock bands.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Died too young
Stevie Ray Vaughan was a beast with a guitar in his hands, he was one of the all time greatest guitar players ever.
And Stevie Ray was cool.
Eric Clapton is another of my favorite guitar players.
One of my favorite guitar solos was David Gilmour's solo at the end of the Pink Floyd song "Have a Cigar" and since I can't seem to find a video of Gilmour himself playing it, here is someone covering it. I wish I could play a guitar like this.

It's ridiculous when you can't find a video of David Gilmour playing his own guitar solo. We're living in a society!
My favorite Rush song is limelight, I love that song, and the guitar playing in it. I love this video with them in the studio in the wilderness.

Pink Floyd and Wishbone Ash

I miss the 90s.

Check this out, Stevie Ray Vaughan breaks the string on his guitar and just casually switches guitars like it's nothing right in the middle of his performance. Be could play the heck out of a guitar!

A lot of great bands came from Seattle in the 90s and Nirvana was one of them. This thread is bringing back a lot of memories, the 90s was my favorite decade for rock by far. This is one of my favorite Nirvana songs, Lithium.

Music is subjective so it is impossible to name the GOAT. However the correct answer is The Rolling Stones from ‘69-‘74 with Mick Taylor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElnnE49absc2 Mick’s are better than 1
doubledragon I caught 4 Stevie Ray Vaughn shows and also saw him break a string and switch guitars in the middle of a solo without missing a beat. I also saw Jerry garcia have guitar trouble, leave the stage for 2 minutes while his band didn't miss a beat.
Awesome, I would have loved to have seen them in person, that must have really cool!
Another great song from the 80s was Wind of Change by The Scorpions. It was written about how the world needs peace.

Led Zeppelin. Great music, great musicians, perfect timing to start in late '60s.
Van Halen & AC/DC both put out some top tier music in the 70’s
Nah. Rolling Stones.
Here's our statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn in Austin, BTW:

The greatest super group in the world, in the universe, in the galaxy, there is no debate,
1 Led Zeppelin !!!!!
you can travel down by the seaside, on your way going to California, by the Ocean, past some Misty Mountains, Over the Hills and Far Far Away, Through the light, you will never find a greater super group ,That's the way .
My favorite Zeppelin tune.

I think U2 gets the nod for me. Massive hit records, soundtracks, movies and tours and still putting out relevant music and radio hits from every album.
And a bonus is their opening acts are typically the next big thing in music, making concerts very worth while..
