The bidders must have wanted that generation of slab very badly. Because I doubt it will 7 and 6s are not usually worth anywhere near that. And of course, who knows what bidding shenanigans might have taken place.
I think the coin is a potential upgrade candidate, but agree that it is not a 67 and sold for strong 66 money. I wonder if it is some esoteric/valuable VAM.
Is there a way to see if it was a floor bid or internet bid that won? The picture shows it to be very strong for the grade, but maybe in person extra eye appeal that can't be seen in the pic really pops.
There are no 1935-P peace dollars in 67 (at least at PCGS). 66 coins are very hard to find, especially when nice. Such coins will always sell for a strong premium to "book" prices. If this piece is as nice as it looks, the sale price doesn't surprise me at all and it has a strong chance to end up in a 66 holder.
Bidding and pricing for top-end Peace dollars seems to me to be fairly intelligent with most buyers bidding for the coin and not the holder. NICE coins almost always sell for strong prices. This is a perfect example of numerous weak coins dragging down prices for solid coins.
I'm grading the obverse soft 66+ and the reverse 65. While the obverse might conceivably be doctored to a 67 by muting the numerous obverse ticks, the more-than-hairlines between E and R can only be fixed by some added toning.
I'm not telling you how to doctor the coin, but how to possibly catch a skillfully doctored one.. ,

That's a killer 65, it'll have a gold bean in no time.
Wow. That's a head scratcher price. Nice coin but head scratching hammer. Gotta love auctions

at least 2 people think it's a 66+
Wow... I like the coin... do not like the cost.... Cheers, RickO

$4000 for a 66 or possibly even a + candidate? Looks stunning!
wowzah, thats one really nice looking peace!
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
Pop reports now show 8 coins at MS67. I assume what I said in early 2017 (that there were none at PCGS) was correct.
Interesting.
Like the cheek but don't like the strike. It doesn't look like a $3,900 strike or reverse but I'm also not an expert in the series.
Nice 1935. 4K? Hmmmm .... I guess all it takes is just two bidders who have to have it. Wow.

I've made a few posts on the 1935 Peace dollar and how crazy some of the price variances are at the same grade.
The coin obviously speaks for itself.
Strong price!
Looks really smooth and satiny!
Likely in PCGS plastic, now, at a higher grade!!
