Yeah, I want to build a house since ours is paid off and we'd like to upgrade. Lumber right now is insane in GA. One of my neighbors runs shift at the yard a few miles from here, he says it's ridiculous what the load value increases have been the past year.

I bought some that lumber for my Wife's Veranda project. I sold stock that went up at the same pace of lumber increase to justify the purchase. It will go down now.

But in reality.. absolutely it can. The inflation of the 1970's and 1980's, which was pretty high (but not hyper), was mainly tied to the price of oil if I recall correctly. What is troublesome to me now, is that there is NOT a single causation factor such as price/availability of oil that is driving the current situation. Now it is multiple factors that are converging... energy costs/lack of energy; lack of shipping; lack of microchips; no one willing to work to increase supplies; pent up demand; trillions of dollars being created out of thin air; .... and on and on.

A perfect storm brewing?

The price of oil was certainly one trigger, but I think the real cause was Fed accommodation of the simultaneous spending on Vietnam and the Great Society.

Well I actually grow my own. The Amish sell them when in season for $1.50 each and they are always wonderfully fresh. Makes you never want to buy a store bought one again (although not much choice if I want them the other 10 months of the year). Anyway, I've never seen a $7 honeydew or a $5 cantaloupe until today. Crazy.

Lumber is around $1 per pound now.

This statement does suggest a question: if inflation is easy to navigate, can you suggest an investment strategy that is "guaranteed" to beat inflation? For example, if I suggest a period -- 7 years -- can you precisely describe a strategy that will beat inflation with a very high chance of success?
