Nice coin. It is also an extremely rare die state. This is only the fourth HM-2 known with a perfect die state. They usually have a rim to rim die crack on the reverse, like your other coin.

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Wow...I knew it was an early die state and rare but I did not know it was that rare. Thank you :) It is amazing the detail this die lost if you look at my EF 40 above.

@Spud2020 The mint mark looks different on those two coins. Am I seeing things?

Really nice coin, the perfect die state is a real bonus. Want to take a better look on my desktop tonight. Cellphone is not doing it justice. My 1838-C is currently sitting with our hosts. Anxiously awaiting my answer!!

Spud2020, hope you don't mind me adding this to your discussion - didn't think we needed separate post. Looks like the grade is finally in for their ugly sister. I think she's a beautiful southern belle. Coming out as VF-35, I'm more than happy with the grade. Just waiting for our hosts to ship it out.

Yeah, the head style, the eagle, and the denomination look different, too. 😉

Not at all :). I love your coin and I bet that there were a few in the grading room that thought it should go 40. It looks almost identical to the details of my 40 above.

    Spud2020,

As much as I love my coin, comments above are dead on, your HM2 without the die crack is that much more rare and interesting. Something tells me there will be more of these $5 Classic heads in my future.

if you are talking about the $5 from the first post and the other in the post with the $2.5; a neat trick i've been doing for years is to take 2 or more images and put them into a folder by themselves, make sure the rotation and diameter of the images match up as closely as possible, then open one image and click forward either slowly or fast and you can do a wonderfully quick comparison. (as i did here and everything matches perfectly minus some circulation smooshing the gold down a bit on one of the examples of the $5 chg making it appear as if some of the devices/dentils are not in similar placement)
