US Mint Rant....AAARRRRRGGGGG

I absolutely despise these random new concave modern commemorative dollar coin designs! What is the point? I have been buying a commemorative dollar from the mint since 1983 and have the entire set housed in a Dansco album where I can flip through the pages with ease and admire the collection in its entirety. These new designs (Baseball, Basketball, etc.) simply are a pain in the butt when it comes to adding them to the album. They don't fit and the design tears at the page causing it to delaminate, not to mention the plastic insert rubs on the convex portion of the coin. Why can't the mint leave well enough alone and quit ruining a perfectly good hobby with ultra-modernistic crap-ola junk?
There, I feel better.

Thanks for your insights into my dilemma but after much deliberation,
I think I will just turn them into "pocket pieces" and the convex side will eventually wear flat after about 50 or so years of circulation. :)

Actually it would make for a cool lowball pocket piece.

I call them 'novelty coins', and do not buy them. I am not a fan of ball sports anyway, so that eliminates that attraction as well. Cheers, RickO

Well I guess the "ball" is not in your court. :)

Have you considered not buying the gimmick shaped "coins"... could be a step towards not buying the coin-shaped "coins" either.

    US mint - bwahahahaha!!!

Set yourself free - buy nothing directly from the mint. You will be much happier.

By the time you get it flat enough, it'll look like a washer. :D

Put the 3-D "coins" into a separate "album", actually a small cardboard box or a ziplock bag.
Optionally put a label on the spot in your flat Dansco album for the coin, noting it is stored in a separate location.
Or just skip these, if you are only buying one coin per year.
If you are trying to maintain a complete set of modern commemoratives, be aware that you will likely lose money when it comes time to sell them.

Easy fix,,,,,, slab the whole set and keep them in a box of 113 pcs,,,,,,, currently,,,,,,, add boxes as needed.

Sounds like the problem isn't with the Mint. It's with your coin album! Needs to be modernized.

A little effort in the mount or album could be a cash cow.
You can't be the only one who has this rant.
    Go for it !

I have a possible solution. Write to the Mint and tell them that whenever they create domed coins, they should make one for you with a flat planchet. Give them the dimensions you want, too. Since the Mint is so collector oriented and friendly, I'm sure they will comply. But, here is a little tip: In your letter to the Mint, write it with crayons. They will think you are a kid, which makes their hearts flutter. They will then rush to meet your request. You may also want to write to Dansco and tell them you want albums with bigger coin holes for these issues. Also, tell them to give you more depth in the album so the coins won't rub. Hope this helps.

Cup-shaped coins are an old story.

    image
Byzantine Empire, Emperor Alexius, Silver Trachy, Christ
Silver, 26 mm, 4.57 gm (low grade silver)
    Struck: AD 1090-1118 Constantinople

People wrote to the mint with complaints but they just couldn't get through the bureaucracy, which was, well, Byzantine.
