Has Rainbow Toning jumped the shark?

I love rainbow toned coins but recently searching for them hasn't resulted in coins that I look for. This is what happens when you type "rainbow toned" into the bay now.

Given all the bids on these, I wonder how much people are making?

    Here are some realized prices:

Rainbow toning is over-rated, and those AT ones pictured don’t add eye appeal to the design at all.

Not appealing to some, myself included, but I'm still surprised by the realized prices.

I think people get confused if they don’t understand toning and they think that any coloration is valuable. Later on when they find out that it’s artificial it probably makes them want to quit collecting.

    Sounds like tuition.

I would say yes. So much crap posted to ebay these days in the name of "rainbow toning" its pretty much a useless search anymore.

I will refrain from using the descriptive adjectives that parade through my mind when viewing the above posted examples. Those who make them, are scamming the inexperienced...and those that buy them are throwing their money away. Garbage. Cheers, RickO

True, attractive NT rainbow toning has not. The ones pictured never had a shark to jump over. Blatant AT plus over saturated pics are a very toxic combo. That's why it pays to look at lots and lots of coins - AT and NT.

If you think the rainbow junk on ebay is bad, try searching for toned coins. Anything from dirt(a lot of these), stains, damage or gosh knows what is presented and then a very few toned coins of which only a vary few of these are attractive to me. JMO

Those prices are still too high on that stuff.

Rainbow toning reminds me of the BU, Gem BU, Gem BU++ days in the coin mags.

    Pretty useless descriptions.

For AT junk, I would say yes, but when you look at ebay, you see the uneducated and uninitiated getting ripped off daily.

True rainbow toning, like the coins you can find at Legend and Great Collection, is still bringing strong money. Even for run of the mill toned coins, some of the prices realized is mind boggling.

What is really funny is the super-toned AT over a well circulated coin. Doesn't NT only occur on UNC or high AU coins anyway? If an NT coin became well circulated, I think the color would become quite muted and lose any toning appeal it once had. Anyway garbage except the 2 PCGS coins above.

If you type in either "PCGS" or "NGC" before the word, "rainbow" you will exclude the chaff and see the jewels available.

Best to just filter toned searches to only certified examples by the 4 eBay accepted graders. Otherwise yes just loads of AT coins.

Even if someone likes the AT look, I'm not sure why it'd add more than a few $ premium on an AU Morgan. Someone out there must like collecting them

Attractive toning has always been a subset of toning. What you call it or how you recognize it is up to you.

I think the rainbow 🌈 toning is overrated. Most of these coins have an unnatural appearance that is gaudy and distracting. I like regular pretty toning instead of a kaleidoscope of overpowering color.
Personally I would not pay huge premiums or even buy some of these weird looking coins

I don't think (true) rainbow toning is overrated, I think the term "rainbow toning" is overused.

Also on the bay, I have noticed a seller using the term “Monster Toning” to sell coins, along with the “rainbow” term, they have the complete opposite effect on me. Unfortunately people are buying them up without understanding the rarity of true coin toning.

A quick search of coin toning tells all...

Having try deduce the science of pricing toners many sellers price them 2-4x market value or more. Rainbow probably much higher. Original mint set toners another class. It’s all in what they can get out of a buyer and that persons perception of how rare they are in relation to the pop of that grade. Like a HB with A speed toners have potential to break for huge gain with the right buyer which may be rare in itself lol.
