I have been looking for one of these for a long time. These seem to come really nice and really expensive or really beat up with dings and scratches due to how heavy they are. I felt this was a nice middle grade piece the surfaces are ok and not a lot of hits. This particular variety come very weakly struck on the eagle.
I have shown this to a few non collectors and their first statement is usually wow that is a heavy coin.
Anyone know why these are called slugs? The only guess I can come up with is a reference to these being "sluggish " to spend and use due to the high face value.
Perhaps someone here knows why they are called "slugs"

Wow! What a slug. My grandfather had one in the 60's and kept it in his cash register at his store. He would show it to me and I remember it's shape and it's weight. I was about 12 or 13 at the time and it filled my palm. No one ever knew what happened to it. Congrats on a most desirable numismatic item.

The original coins were termed "Ingots" by the United States Mint because of their large weight and value of $50. These ingots became commonly known as a "Slug" because of its size.

Found it in the Red Book listed under Private and Territorial Gold. Sometimes referred to as ingots. "Private coins were circulated due to a shortage of regular coinage." There is a neat story of a wagon trail looted by Indians in the Panamint range in California and a cache $50 slugs were stolen and buried. The Chief was seen wearing one on occasion. Neat coin!

I purchased a collection several months back from across the (state) border. I had found a list of several certified coins that were supposedly in this collection on first visit, one of the coins was Humbert 50. It took several trips to get everything, and most of the coins that were on the list , eventually came thru, but this coin and one other supposedly high relief saint never came. Finally on the last day, I had asked the guy selling for the family if he knew anything about them, and he said that the grandmother gave away all the gold coins to the grandkids, nieces and nephews. I was thinking, I hope they had sense enough to know what they had, my guess is the first pawn shop or gold buying place in thier area, got a heck of a deal.
