You've Got To Collect The Whole Set!

JBNJBN Posts: 1,904 ✭✭✭✭✭

Oh, US Mint. We have the 2021 Peace Dollar. We have the 2021 Morgan Dollar (plain/Philadelphia). We've got CC and O mint privy marks. And the S and D mint marks.
All six for $85 a pop.
The Mint sure knows its customer base!

It's tough to keep up. Wouldn't want the whole set, anyway.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

No, I don't need to the whole set. If I had that in mind, I would have never collected the early U.S. half dimes. The 1802 half dime is beyond my budget and always will be.

I still try to collect the whole set.

Do you have an extra $139,000 to $450,000 sitting around? That has been the price range since I have been collecting those coins.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Offering mint marks and mint privy marks is at least a little clever. Can we assume that all the privy mintmarked coins are minted in Philadelphia?

No, an 1802 half dime is in my dreams also. By trying, I meant to at least get as many to my set as possible. I am still waiting for an 1878-S liberty seated half dollar and an 1873-CC arrows seated quarter. I imagine that your half-dime set is awesome. I still need about 10 early half dimes to complete a date set. Most of the time, I am out of the search at this time because of the cost of the older coins.

They have said that already. IMO they should be officially considered Philly varieties and shouldn’t show up on respective mint mark type sets.

I'm going to try for the 2021 (P) Morgan and Peace. The O and CC don't make sense to me. My next choice would be the 2021-D Morgan.

My series (Maundy) has roughly 300 four coin sets to complete. Never going to happen.

I imagine that your half-dime set is awesome.

I have been working on it since 1976. There might be a few upgrades, but not many. I have "gone about as "fer" as I can go." (Taken from the lyrics from "Kansas City" in the musical "Oklahoma."

There are more West Virginia coal scrip tokens than all other states put together. I don’t know why I keep trying to add to my collection, but I do. No one will ever have a complete collection.

That's kind of like collecting 19th century presidential campaign items listed in DeWitt/Sullivan. I have over 600, but it's far short of complete. I have a few that are not in the book, but most definitely from the campaigns.

You must collect the entire set! That must be something they teach in marketing school. It seems to surface in every aspect of collectibles, even happy meal toys.

Here’s an interesting twist on that. NBA Top Shots, Dapper has “Challenges “ where if you acquire all of the different Moments required to Complete the Challenge, you receive an even more limited production Moment that is never included in Pack drops. For what that’s worth to you.

Kind of like collecting phonograph records-no one has even close to a complete collection.

I'm all in for the new silver dollars! I don't buy many issues from the mint. A few every year. Anyway, I'm always satisfied with what I receive. Always quality as far as I'm concerned. Maybe I set the bar too low. Maybe........some set it too high.

P.S. The current silver Presidential Medals series is of EXCELLENT quality. But.....maybe the mint just sends me the good ones. It's possible. Who knows?

As a rule I never collect a whole set. For one, not all the coins are worthy or they simply lack potential. I'd rather buy 20 coins with potential and mojo than 100 that are so-so and have little to no potential. The only set I ever completed was an 1858-0 mint set, half dime, dime, quarter, half dollar in MS64 to MS65. No way would ever I want to pay to get every date in say seated quarters, dimes, and halves. There are too many dates without potential. And in many cases it's the super keys (like Bill Jones' 1802 half dime) that are so high-priced they might have very limited potential for years to come. It's often in the semi-keys and scarcer dates where the sleepers live.

I will get the Morgan with the CC privy and a 2021 Peace.... Not interested in all the other varieties. Cheers, RickO

I will try for the 2021 Morgan S and the 2021 Peace dollar.
