Do you think the verdigris on the reverse of this half cent prevents a straight grade?

Yes.
I think for a post 1814 copper yes. For a pre 1815 copper, I'd say no.

"Sou Mangueira......."
As is probably so.
With conservation maybe not.
I have noticed some coins lately in top holders with conserved, neutralized verdigris.
I didn't much care for them but it is what it is.
It appears likely that it would not straight grade....Conservation could save it. Cheers, RickO
I don't think it can be conserved to a straight grade eligibility. A couple of the reverse spots will surely reveal pitting when removed.
Yes - conservation should help.
The green crud needs to be removed.
That’s a shame because it’s a gorgeous half cent otherwise.
It looks as if someone already tried “picking at it “.....so I’m guessing it’s on there pretty good. It’s not the soft stuff that can be removed by soaking and using a thorn. Guessing Verdigone might work though.

Thanks for the replies. ANACS graded it EF40/40 in the 80's. I'll have to look at the photo cert and see if this was there or developed after it was graded.
As others have said, I doubt it would straight grade at our host. Doesn't NGC offer conservation??

Not as-is, but looks like the veridgris can be removed by using Veri-Care or having PCGS conserve it. Good luck finding any Verdi-Care though.
In that condition I would bet good money it would not straight grade. If conserved, depends on what's underneath.
yes
PCGS does.
