Why would anyone in their right mind hold a coin like this?

    I have to say I've never seen a coin displayed like this on the Heritage or StacksBowers websites. Time for you to find some new sellers.

    I'm assuming the above is to blame for this... unfortunately this is the only problem I can identify on this coin. Oh well moving on.

    I would say these coins probably are old coins, may be cleaned already, and the surface does not matter anymore.
    Actually, the 2 coins look like medals.

    Yes, these are all medals and tokens. Some are pretty interesting. Shame they are in the possession of someone who hasn't been taught to care for them properly.
