Georgia man receives $915 in pennies as final paycheck
A Georgia man says he was given $915 worth of pennies as a form of payment from his previous employer
The man said he was shocked to see his final payment: 90,000 oil or grease covered pennies, at the end of his driveway earlier this month, news outlets reported. Atop the pile was an envelope with his final paystub and an explicit parting message.

I googled his auto shop and he is getting hammered on facebook...
Ha yeah this was on the news yesterday morning. Wheelbarrow full and the lovely note on top, crazy.
I wonder if he is going to do a CRS on them and find that magic coin worth thousands.

I like this quote from this article.
“With that many pennies, we’re bound to find a few treasures. I’ve already found one from 1937,” Oxley said.
This would be @joeycoins dream come true. Home delivery. Like Amazon Prime for pennies. One less trip to the bank but also one less Starbucks. So win, win, lose

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
He doesn't need to accept pennies as payment. He could clean the oil from them send a bill to the shop for doing so, billed at union rates, and a note saying to pick up the pennies promptly or be charged $50 (or whatever) a day for storage. Be sure to include waste disposal, environmental, and "shop fees" since there's oil involved. This is on top of an acceptable form of payment for the last paycheck. Take the whole thing to their local Judge Judy while the amount is still within small claims court.

That is just pure spite..... I would get an attorney and sue the twit.... Settlement would include attorney fees and labor storage for the cents. Cheers, RickO
Yeah, and your a weenie if you don't.

Somewhere in that pile of crap there’s a penny pony. Good for him for seeing the positive and lightening the load.
Why so serious?
The last line is what I liked the most- where his girlfriend said: "After the first shovel full, all we could do was laugh because this poor miserable man took so much time to be vindictive and cruel. We absolutely refused to let him ruin a single moment of ours.”
Yep, it's all about attitude. We can't control other people but we can control how we let them affect us.
They all must have really liked the guy where he worked.............

I'd find out who owed that auto shop some money and screwed them also and sell them to them to pay the shop.
A bad penny always returns...
Andreas Flaten, the man that received the coins was essentially paid in cash. Not that I would do this, but had he said nothing, he could easily still have a claim against the shop owner. The shop owner has nothing in writing to prove payment was made.
Who would have the last laugh then?!
He may have made a video of his delivery.

I can make a video or take a picture of a delivery too. But that is not proof of payment for a final paycheck. Unless the shop owner has proof Mr. Flaten accepted it. Which Mr. Flaten by mere publicity had at this point.
A signed receipt is proof. A paycheck stub to a bank account is proof. But placing coins on a driveway, taking a picture of it and saying Mr. Flaten received it is not proof. The shop owner could drop cash on Mr. Flaten’s front porch, take a picture, then take the cash and leave. It wouldn’t hold up in court without written proof of payment. I’m sure a lawyer would explain it better.
I disagree COMPLETELY.
First of all, your gambit requires asking Mr. Flaten to commit perjury in order to get some petty revenge. I'm sure a lawyer would explain that better.
It would be he said/he said and come down to the credibility of the witnesses. And there are likely multiple witnesses. While a written receipt is better than other forms of evidence, it is not the only acceptable form of evidence.
I think his laughing it off is a much better strategy.
That's a lot of cents to be dipped.
Cement mixer, detergent, bulk drying, a few phone calls to some banks, and that’s the end of it.
I’d bet there’s two sides to this story and I bet they’re both ugly.
maybe it isn't as bad as it sounds.
this video shows the lovely departing letter and it even says thank you on the envelope.
all those hard years and dedication of service surely have paid off?
I immediately thought of @joeykoins, too!
He'd be in heaven and surely would pull a few doubled dies out of the mix.

In Canada and some other countries, The number of individual denominations you may use to pay your debt to a vendor is limited by law. The reason is exactly, amongst other reasons, to prevent what happened here in spite.
I should rephrase this and say it this way: the number of individual denominations a merchant may accept in one transaction is limited. However, a merchant can, if he wants, accept any number. his choice.
Andreas, penny baron, good attitude, good on you!
Funny story, good press, direct and non subtle note on the top of the pile.
Why so serious?
Exactly
IIRC cents are not legal tender so he did not have to accept them.
Can a coin sorter separate out the Pre-1982s? Melt is almost 3 cents apiece for those.
Put em up for sale on CraigsList or FaceBook for $900.
He’ll have to buy some de-greaser and soak them before he sorts.
😊
I'm not saying I did this once (BUT I DID)...
Back in my college days, I rcvd a $25 ticket from the ever so Barney Fife College Police department for a parking meter violation.
Guess how they got paid??
Hey, at least I was nice enough to put all the pennies in a bank bag for them (the same one I got from the bank when I purchased them)!!!
;-)

31 U.S. Code § 5103 - Legal tender
United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues. Foreign gold or silver coins are not legal tender for debts.
Coinage Act of 1965
SEC. 102. All coins and currencies of the United States (including
Federal Reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal Reserve banks
and national banking associations), regardless of when coined or
issued, shall be legal tender for all debts, public and private, public
charges, taxes, duties, and dues.
Everything goes in Georgia, except of course handing out food and water ....
yes, these may be legal tender when paying a Gov agency.
However, does anyone have to accept them as payment for goods or dept?
A lady come into the shop to pay her bill with a rubbermaid storage tub full of coins. She was a street preacher. The boss told her to roll em up and take em to the bank. I was not really into collecting coins back then. Now I would have bought them from her. lol
Saw the story, wonder if there are any error coins among the grease?
I also would never do business with the employer that pulled this infantile stunt..

Update, coinstar came through and rounded up for him and did some nice charity pops.

Nothing stated about what Coinstar actually did with the grease laden pennies. Guess they didn't want to be accused of money laundering.

Coinstar just got thousands of dollars worth of free advertising. Smart business decision on their part.

Timely observation.
Last night's History Channel had a feature that included the subject of Curtis Candy Company, originators of Baby Ruth and Butterfinger Candy Bars. Included was how its owner was able to popularize the newly introduced Butterfinger by having it presented to Shirley Temple in a contemporary movie. That was the original "Product Placement" and the presumably "free" advertising that followed was reported as instrumental to the success and acceptance of the new candy bar and survival/expansion of the company itself.
Mr. Flaten and his girlfriend sound like they have the right attitude. Plotting revenge for petty stupidity shortens your life. I doubt Coinstar would have made their gesture had this become a tit-for-tat.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
If I ever want my 15 minutes of fame, I'll have a friend of mine who owns a local restaurant get into a "dispute" with me, and I'll pay him with one of these stupid 14 bank bags of pre-82 Memorials that I bought back in the 90's. Maybe I'll tip the waitress $500 in pennies for bad service. Mind = blown.
