A Georgia man says he was given $915 worth of pennies as a form of payment from his previous employer

The man said he was shocked to see his final payment: 90,000 oil or grease covered pennies, at the end of his driveway earlier this month, news outlets reported. Atop the pile was an envelope with his final paystub and an explicit parting message.

I'd find out who owed that auto shop some money and screwed them also and sell them to them to pay the shop.

Andreas Flaten, the man that received the coins was essentially paid in cash. Not that I would do this, but had he said nothing, he could easily still have a claim against the shop owner. The shop owner has nothing in writing to prove payment was made.

I can make a video or take a picture of a delivery too. But that is not proof of payment for a final paycheck. Unless the shop owner has proof Mr. Flaten accepted it. Which Mr. Flaten by mere publicity had at this point.
A signed receipt is proof. A paycheck stub to a bank account is proof. But placing coins on a driveway, taking a picture of it and saying Mr. Flaten received it is not proof. The shop owner could drop cash on Mr. Flaten’s front porch, take a picture, then take the cash and leave. It wouldn’t hold up in court without written proof of payment. I’m sure a lawyer would explain it better.

    I disagree COMPLETELY.

First of all, your gambit requires asking Mr. Flaten to commit perjury in order to get some petty revenge. I'm sure a lawyer would explain that better.

It would be he said/he said and come down to the credibility of the witnesses. And there are likely multiple witnesses. While a written receipt is better than other forms of evidence, it is not the only acceptable form of evidence.

I think his laughing it off is a much better strategy.

In Canada and some other countries, The number of individual denominations you may use to pay your debt to a vendor is limited by law. The reason is exactly, amongst other reasons, to prevent what happened here in spite.
I should rephrase this and say it this way: the number of individual denominations a merchant may accept in one transaction is limited. However, a merchant can, if he wants, accept any number. his choice.

IIRC cents are not legal tender so he did not have to accept them.

I'm not saying I did this once (BUT I DID)...

Back in my college days, I rcvd a $25 ticket from the ever so Barney Fife College Police department for a parking meter violation.

    Guess how they got paid??

Hey, at least I was nice enough to put all the pennies in a bank bag for them (the same one I got from the bank when I purchased them)!!!

yes, these may be legal tender when paying a Gov agency.
However, does anyone have to accept them as payment for goods or dept?

A lady come into the shop to pay her bill with a rubbermaid storage tub full of coins. She was a street preacher. The boss told her to roll em up and take em to the bank. I was not really into collecting coins back then. Now I would have bought them from her. lol

    Timely observation.

Last night's History Channel had a feature that included the subject of Curtis Candy Company, originators of Baby Ruth and Butterfinger Candy Bars. Included was how its owner was able to popularize the newly introduced Butterfinger by having it presented to Shirley Temple in a contemporary movie. That was the original "Product Placement" and the presumably "free" advertising that followed was reported as instrumental to the success and acceptance of the new candy bar and survival/expansion of the company itself.

Mr. Flaten and his girlfriend sound like they have the right attitude. Plotting revenge for petty stupidity shortens your life. I doubt Coinstar would have made their gesture had this become a tit-for-tat.

If I ever want my 15 minutes of fame, I'll have a friend of mine who owns a local restaurant get into a "dispute" with me, and I'll pay him with one of these stupid 14 bank bags of pre-82 Memorials that I bought back in the 90's. Maybe I'll tip the waitress $500 in pennies for bad service. Mind = blown.
