i am trying to find the value of these Morgan Silver Dollars. Graded MS65, 1880-s, 1881-s, 1882-s

I purchased these in the 1980's not knowing much about coin grading etc. The representative I bought from was Irving Kalus who worked for ARCG in New York. I was informed he was going on a leave and would eventually return. I never ever did know if he came back to the firm or not. All i received was that Walter S. Rubin and Norman Silver would be handling my portfolio. Anyhow never heard from Rubin or Silver. With each purchase from Irving Kalus I received a laminated card with the picture of the coin front and back with the ACS# and also the Grade MS65 and my Name on the cards. I tried to get a good picture of the front of the coin it was kind of hard to get because of the relections of the lights and I just used my Ipad to do them which I am attaching. Any response from anyone would be appreciated. At tis time I can only assume that Mr. Irving Kalus who was put on leave from the firm graded them correctly. I never did buy any coins from Mr. Rubin or Mr Silver who was being assigned to my account after Mr. Kalus was put on leave.

Nice coins. All three appear to be at least MS65, with a possibility of MS66.

They are easily worth $150 to $300 each, depending on how they grade out.

They are definitely worth sending to our hosts for grading.

If they were graded by either PCGS or NGC they would be worth about $125.00 each. The way they are you would have to find someone else who thinks they are MS-65. All three are very common date coins.

Nice coins and nice images. I would concur with the original opinion, maybe MS66

Grading incurs alot of fees, especially if a one and done project.

You would likely net about the same or even more listing them on BST

At the top of this page, click on PCGS. Than click on price guide. ;)

@douglasj .... Welcome aboard.... Nice looking Morgans... Will need to see the reverse of each coin for a final opinion. Based solely on the obverse pictures, they look like 65's.....Cheers, RickO

Hopefully they all turn out ok on the site.

Welcome. Looks like you purchased some nice coins rather than much of the junk that was passed in the 1980s as "BU" material. That's great news ... really.

I concur with sending them into PCGS for grading if you want to sell them.

Regarding value, keep two things in mind. First, the 1980s selling grade may not equate to the 2021 market grade (may be higher or lower). In other words, what you were sold as an MS-65 "back in the day" may be considered anything from MS-63 to MS-67 today. But based on your obverse images, I am guessing your coins are in the MS-65 to MS-66 grade range.

Second, the relative value may likely be much lower now, adjusted for inflation. Back in the mid 1980s, Morgan dollars were an investor staple and accurately graded MS-65 common date Morgans retailed for $175 or so. "Investment clients" sold coins by the "investment firms" generally paid more. Today, the same Morgan dollar can be purchased, already graded by PCGS or NGS, can be readily purchased for that same $175 (or for less). If the same Morgan coin grades higher today (e.g. MS-66), the coin would cost around $275, retail.

Now, that same $175 in 1985 adjusted for inflation, is worth around $425 today.

Common date Morgans that are not worth slabbing. Don't worry about the folks you bought them from as it means nothing to the current market or to anyone who might buy them. If you don't want them I suggest you check local dealers for buy prices and sell to the highest offer. I suspect you overpaid for all three and will probably lose money even after all this time.

From what I see only the 1881-S looks MS65, the other two I think would grade MS64 in todays grading room. These are all super common, PCGS population for the 1881-S alone shows there are 57,000+ already graded at the MS65 level with 17,800 graded higher. Save your money and skip the cost to have these graded as you will only be wasting that money, there are already more available than there is demand. It will cost you at least $35 per coin and you will be very lucky to see that much of an increase in value especially if they grade lower than MS65.

If you want to sell them my suggestion is to use the BST (buy, sell, trade) section of this forum and sell them just as they are. Another option is to visit a couple of local coin shops and see what is offered, do not be surprised if the offers are quite low. My guess is that almost every coin shop already has several of these dates in inventory so dealers may not be offering much for items that may sit in inventory for a long time.

Nice looking coins but they are commons.
I would recommend that you have them graded.
