Dirty (XXX) Coinage

Now that I've got your attention with the (XXX). Whilst rolling up all my loose coinage from the jug I toss it in, it always seems the most dirty or mutilated coin is the cent. Just does not ever get much respect. Must be from their parking lot,in/on ground existence. Tossed without any regard. This does not seem to befall the higher denoms. A minor observation I grant you.

Kennedys are my quest...
And I was hoping for some dirty old gold images!
See http://www.doubledimes.com for a free online reference for US twenty-cent pieces
I figured it would be a group of brothel tokens!
Haha--you totally clickbaited us.
They're darker, and if somebody drops one on the ground, they don't care to pick it up because it's just a penny, so it gets stepped on and spilled on, and people don't care, until a little boy or girl sees it and picks it up, then somehow it gets back to you.

“See a penny, pick it up—all day long you’ll have good luck!” Maybe you’ve heard this phrase before, and maybe you’ve even stopped to pick up a lucky penny off the sidewalk. But sometimes those pennies you see on the ground look anything but lucky. They appear brown or black, and sometimes they’re so dirty looking you can’t even tell whether they’re pennies!

.....or potty dollars or large cents with one of the letters on the denomination re-engraved to a U.

@PerryHall .... I have one of those large cents... courtesy of a forum member. No potty dollars (but have often seen them at shows in the PNW). Lots of parking lot cents though... yes, I do pick them up. Cheers, RickO
I use fabreeze air spray on dirty cents

I have a half cent with that letter changed to a U
@astrorat
I'll oblige...

I think that it's because of the composition currently used by the mint. Many of them are already starting to look scuzzy right out of the roll.
I find a lot of quarters that are pretty badly abused.
I actually collect damaged coins, the more run over they look the more I like them. I need to document them some day.
This is my dirty Hawaiian (so called dollar HK-722B) before and after pictures. HK-722B is a bear to locate in antique bronze (to the best of my knowledge no TPG has encapsulated/graded a problem-free example) Conservation performed by NCS. The "49 State" is not an error but a blunder. Also, the intact 49 is HTF as most are drilled out (HK book shows a holed version representing HK-722, HK-722A, and HK-722B).
Conserved HK-722B in slab.

I also think that a lot of the dirty is the fact that copper is much more reactive than nickel. Old brown pennies seem to leave a dirty feeling residue on the fingers. That and gunk seems to stick to the copper cent better. Add that to the cent having no respect and being left in less than desirable places and you have dirty XXX.
I once heard that over a million cents are dropped, tossed, lost on the ground each and every day. People don't seem to stoop to pick them up either........except me.

I always pick them up. Found a 1969-S today. And a Grant $1 coin in a parking garage. Last week a 35-P cent. Does not require much effort. Besides, it's a habit "culled " from when we were youngins.
One thing about putting together a set of damaged coins. All will be unique.
Maybe that’s why the clean ones cost so much.
