No, the images don’t give the appearance of a failed (or successful) attempt at gassing. And no, I don’t think it looked like that when it was graded, either.

Dipped and improperly rinsed. It looked fine when it was graded but turned in the slab over time due to dip residue left on the coin after being improperly rinsed. A second dip with a proper rinse may fix this coin.

It that is the case,,,,, and I am not saying it isn't then I don't think it got rinsed at all. ;)

    What is the grade?

If it's "Genuine, Not Gradeable", then yes, it looked like this ;)

It is a MS65 graded coin.
I didn't think it looked like that when graded either,,,,,,, just wasn't sure what caused it to turn like that. I thought it was rather severe for a bad dip, as I said above,,,,,, it must not have been rinsed at all if that is what caused it. I thought that gassing might be more likely.

I'm inclined to agree with Perry about an acid dip that wasn't neutralized. I've also seen PVC slime develop like this.

If the label look OK, I agree with the above.

Sometimes you see environmental damage on the slab, but it affects the coin and the label.

improperly rinsed and turned as Perry stated. if it wasn't rinsed at all the change would have taken place while at PCGS.

    Improper rinse.

Don't think it looked that way, when slabbed.

It must have been a rush job in the bathroom of a major show.

I agree with @PerryHall ... Looks like a quick dip and dry.... then a slow degradation. Cheers, RickO

Any idea when the coin was slabbed?

It is not my coin,,,,,, don't want to post the entire slab and ID it. It is a newer slab though.
