Since a nickel isn’t clad, it looks like some kind of environmental or intentional chemical reaction to me.

Nickels are a solid 75%Copper 25%Nickel alloy it can't be missing a layer.

It doesn't look like a improperly annealed planchet. I'm going with environmental damage or some post mint coating. Whatever is on it seems to be peeling on the Obv at the top of the head and rev under the STATES OF

That is post mint damage....either environmental or intentional. No numismatic premium. Cheers, RickO

PCGS will certify it as a Mint Error,

Nice to know it’s a real error. I haven’t seen one like that before. I stand happily corrected.

Interestingly, once it becomes a genuine error, it turns from ugly to pretty.

Agreed - it’s a genuine improperly annealed error. They don’t all look like this, but there are many of this type with the exact same surface colors.

The alloy includes copper which migrates to the surface when annealed too long or under too much heat.

If Fred says it's an error, believe me, it is.

Lol, for me it goes from ugly to interesting. The kind of thing I’d prefer to find and not buy.

I guess by pretty I meant interesting and by ugly, I meant not interesting.
