Finished Kennedy book

scooter25scooter25 Posts: 769 ✭✭✭✭

Finally finished my first Kennedy dansco (1964-2012). And I couldn’t be happier. 2nd book is only missing 7 coins and it will be done too. Pretty happy about it.

Beautiful, dude! You do know the last 20 years (2002-2021) are NIFC's right? If you don't mind me asking, how did you get a hold of those years? Well, except the last 7 you need to complete. :*

I buy mint and proof sets and break them out . Pretty much how I did 95% of the set

The latest years, 2002-2020, if lucky, you can find those for 50c face, in FANTASTIC condition! Just ask your bank for half rolls. Or even better, a whole case for $500. 50 rolls.

    Very Attainable

Check out my thread about these NIFC's were talking about.

@scooter25: That looks great! I've actually been working on a variant of this set (in a blank Whitman album) which I'll post in a few weeks as well. It is a much more interesting series than I had realized until I started working on my own set.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts (or other people's thoughts!) on the following:

I think it is fair to say that there are three major "eras" in the design of the portrait of JFK:

1964 - 1990: the original Gilroy Roberts portrait (with two varieties in 1964, regular and accented hair)

    1991 - 2014: a revised and less profound portrait

2014 - current: return to a portrait very similar to (perhaps executed even better than) the original Gilroy Roberts portrait.

In 2014, two portraits were used, the middle era for most coins, and the revised design, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary coins. The revised design has been used ever since 2014.

QUESTION: with respect the middle era, I understand that the mint adjusted the look from time to time, though I find it hard to definitively divide this era into subperiods. Do have any details or thoughts on this?

By the way, I think that the PCGS Kennedy "TYPE" classification is incorrect. They describe Type 5 as limited to 2014 coins. It would be more accurate to describe Type 5 as going from 2014 through to the present.

That, sir, is very kind of you. However, I cannot in good conscious accept them. I have the P and D’s completed a the way through 2020. All I’m missing now are proofs and silver proofs. Thank you so much for the offer though.

Nice looking set! This is the set that got it all started for me back in the mid 80's. Once I had mine complete I started dabbling in major varieties like DDO's, No FG's and matte/satin finishes. This helped keep the collection going and added some "excitement" to the set while not being too terribly expensive.

    Something for you to consider.

@MASSU2: I like the custom album you’ve created!

Any thoughts on the Kennedy portrait eras?

Nice sets! I like the Kennedy Half in terms of building and maintaining the set, and even spending the non-silver face value issues in commerce is fun.

For anyone looking for the post-2001 halves, they should be readily available as singles in B+M shops. The one I help out with stocks P + D each year.

@scooter25 ... Great set and a significant achievement. I did a set of Kennedy halves up to 2010... then stopped buying the mint/proof sets.... I do have a few of the variants (DD/TD) and of course, several of the AH halves - focused on them for a while. Might go back to it to bring it up to date... maybe. Cheers, RickO

I have been dabbling in AH coins and looking for other varieties.

Great job! I gotta admit that after seeing @joeykoins kind offer for those later years I feel a bit guilty that I didn't make the same offer; however, it still was nice to see your post in the BST and I'd been sort of waiting for a kindred spirit that would appreciate those later years I'd set aside. The nice big coins make for a great looking album don't they? @MASSU2 has a great way to carry on the collection into the varieties - I like the way that they made such a professional looking Dansco page with them. Keeping it fun and sharing the excitement and feeling of accomplishment is what the hobby is all about to me.

Spending the halves is fun. I paid for eggs and chorizo at Costco with all halves, the cashier thought they were Dollars and tried to return some to me until I informed him that they were half dollars. Same at the fast food window, gas station, local market's. I limit the halves to 20 in one transaction.
