NEWPS Gorgeous 1881s, how’d I do.

I know 81-s Morgan’s are known for being particularly amazing, but this is a drop dead gorgeous one. It looks like a easy 65 possible 66 to my inexperienced eyes. What do y’all think. Paid 125 for it. How’d I do?

Looks like a $75 dipped out coin with secondary tone to me, I'd return it if you can.

The slab is from the 80s
Yes I know from what I have read the firm was started by the founders of what is now Heritage, does not change my opinion.

I'm not a big fan of Morgans, but this one has some character that's attractive to me. The reverse is especially nice with the color IMO. I will say that the gashes on the neck are pretty obvious, and there's quite a bit of fingerprinting on both sides. Overall I think you did okay. Definitely get a TrueView if you send it to our hosts.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
I’m honestly tempted to see if it will cross as a 65 and get a true view
Looks like it has most if not all its original luster to me, and nice target toning. I think those holders are kind of cool, I would keep it as-is.
I wouldn't, from the picture it doesn't appear to have any luster in the obv.
But it is not my money. If you do submit the coin good luck😊
It looks nice and I think you did fine. It was likely white when it went into that holder. I’d keep it there.
A forum member above me is not known to be particularly complimentary in his/her postings.
Thank you!
Do those holders sell for a premium? I mean a 65 PCGS is more than a 64 sooo
I didn't think I was being uncomplimentary or have I ever. Just my opinion 😊
It’s attractive. The vampire marks on Liberty's neck might prevent it from going higherthan 63 or 64 though. The old holder makes it cooler than if in a PCGS holder, in my opinion

Not sure from the photos how the luster is. That date is know for amazing luster. Being that it's a common date, not really worth cracking and submitting unless you think it would go 66. Based on the photos, I think it's properly graded at 64. A pleasing coin in a vintage holder.
I think you’re already into it at a high price. I wouldn’t spend even more on a crossover attempt.

Based on the reverse picture, which was taken at a better angle to view the luster, I think you did well (unless you paid moon money). Looks solid, and the holders are rare. I would leave it as is, but only because even at 65, 1881-s are not really hard to find.
I also agree, the toning probably developed after it was holdered.

125, is it to much?
I am getting old. Totally missed that, and the video.
That's a tad much for a 64, even a pretty 64. Too much marking, subdued luster on the obverse to 65 unless the color carries (IMO), and that color probably wouldn't carry it ... but this is not my genre.

Lacking luster (for an 1881-S) prohibits a higher grade.

Damn. Why do every time I walk into a coin shop someone sees a young in-experienced autistic kid and decides to take advantage of me?!
I have a bunch of raw ones that look very similar, all from an original roll.
I sent a couple of the nicer ones in to our host and they came back as 64’s.
Their bar for this date and mm is pretty high.
Perhaps mine aren’t as clean as yours?
My target toning isn’t as strong.
In any event, if you dig it, that’s what really counts! :-)

I like it. I just want to be able to resell it later without ideally taking a loss or if I take one not to much of one. 1881s's are known for being amazing.
I know some plastic carries a premium to me $125 is too much.
I’m not saying that’s what was done here. But no one can take advantage of you if you don’t let them.

If the OP liked the coin before this thread then he should still enjoy it afterward. In today's market $125. is not a crazy amount for your Morgan.

Don't fret. To me it is a PQ 64 or a just made-it 65 in a cool holder. $125 is probably full retail or a tad above that, but you will learn and get a better deal on comparable coins going forward.
So it sounds like it's worth most of what you paid for it, and should be kept as is. Any extra cost is just a slight tuition payment.
@CaliforniaKing

Do yourself a favor and do a little research before buying. You can check PCGS CoinFacts for yourself on your cell phone while at the dealer and educate yourself as to the coins value in a PCGS certified holder, which usually may add to the coins sale value. Here is an example of what you will see. Also, you can check HA, Great Collections and ebay websites to find what
this type coin and grade have recently sold for. Easier to be uneducated while also easy to be educated. It's all up to you. Best of luck.

It's a nice coin and all that matters is that you like it.

If you like it $125 was not too much to pay.
Price guides don't take into account for toning, ugly toning can be well below & monster toning can be well above.
You never know what the future may bring, the holder may be worth more than the coin years from now.
Yea.. There was no wifi there xD and anyways the price guide is just that a guide. People pay 5-10x as much for PQ coins (Not like this one) Plus I figured a old rare holder= like a rattler
Yea, live you learn.
Short answer is yes. Reverse looks nice from what I see in the picture. Obverse is not as nice to my eye. Won't grade higher in my opinion. Leave it as is and maybe the holder can save some of your investment. Others would better value the holder, which I doubt does much to the value. We have all overpaid at one time or another.
Enjoy the coin and move on.
Asking what people think here is always risky business

I feel the coin was white when it was encapsulated and toned over time from the paper label.
As to paying $125... Well I pay that for 4 pizzas these days and have nothing the day after.
I am with the 64 crowd on this, and I like the toning. You video shows some luster, but the obverse is not as nice as the reverse. Cool holder too. If you like it for the price, then that is what should matter most to you. Thanks for sharing it.
Any chance the plastic used in that older holder is less stable? Is that holder electrostatically sealed or glued? Peace Roy

I like it. For me the value would mostly be in the holder. Keep it and enjoy it.
I’m not familiar with how valuable the holder is.
How so?
Is the holder more valuable?
Why not?
If you really like the coin and you think you paid a fair amount why does it matter what others think?

It sounds like you really like the coin. If you paid full retail, so what. I like it also.

That's true, but first you have to be able to identify ugly, monster, and in between. The photo doesn't show lustre well enough for me to fully judge it, but I think the toning is neutral at best, and this is the single easiest date for the entire Morgan series to find with screaming lustre, not to mention toning in every pattern. On the whole as a Morgan, the coin seems okay to me, but doesn't seem great. For an 81-S, it probably doesn't score as well. In short, a price guide can be useful, but you have to know about the coins to be able to use them.
Not even indigestion?
The “how’d I do?” question will be borne out by time and how you do when you sell. We’ve probably all got coins that were good or bad buys on the day we got them, and we’re under water or doing just fine on now (I’m looking at you, Proof Merc I got in ‘06
).
Get your money’s worth by enjoying the coin and learning. Paying full retail isn’t being taken advantage of. It’s not ideal, and maybe you can negotiate better next time, but you’re good.

Agree
I'm thinking about heading to the casino this weekend and there is a good chance I will lose at least double that.
I like the coin and the holder. Personally would leave it as is.
No at that price level it's a high quality last meal execution type of pie
It could matter in terms of learning for the future. In this case, about market value, the type of holder and about toning (whether due to the holder in which it resides, or otherwise).

Neither the coin nor the holder would interest me. It is, however, well known, that I do not care for tarnished coins. And I do not collect slabs, just coins. I would not recommend trying for a higher grade on that coin. Cheers, RickO
