Looks like a rattler, hence MS65. Might get a bump by modern standards.

    EDIT: i before e, except after c... o:)

Looks like wonderful surfaces and luster quality, and the strike is outstanding!!

I'm not sure that color makes sense to my eyes, but that is a 65 or better unless I am absolutely missing something.

Great looking coin! I would say 66?

That would be an unusual color for a business strike Shield nickel. Is the white balance off or is the image close to accurate?

    1. I suspect the color balance of the photo is way off.

It is actually very close to true color. Just not as nice as the coin in hand. These are the photos from the auction site when purchased.

That looks like a more normal color.

Truth be told I got into a bidding war and payed a handsome some for this coin. I will never get my money out of the coin but I do enjoy looking at it.

Your thoughts on grade? You never guessed.

As far as color I used the oil trick and wonder if it caused the coin to look more gold. The oil does have a golden color.

I would guess MS65... Why did you oil the coin? Or do you mean you oiled the slab? Cheers, RickO

On the slab to cover scratches. I do not mess with raw coins.

I’ll guess MS65. I typically hesitate to guess in instances like this, as I don’t feel like I have a good idea what the coin really looks like.

I don't think those are rim nicks, just the holder gasket.

Appears to be the little triangular tabs on a rattler, not a gasket. To these eyes, anyway.

CJ, same thing, no use to split hairs. it's what holds the coin in place. bottom line, not rim nicks.

The 65's have it. This coin has been really hard to photo and obviously I still haven't got it right yet. In hand the coin is stellar and I believe it would easily upgrade. I am of the opinion I was bidding against an upgrade specialist but have no proof. It might of just been other collectors who also found the coin very attractive. Here are the slab shots from the Stacks auction.
