And to the folks that say "I only buy coins, not holders" good for you but it's a wee bit condescending and myopic IMHO. But, I used to think the same and I paid up for NGC coins I liked . I thought I was so smart and was actually a little smug about it. Then one day I tried to sell them. That was enlightening. I had to cross them ( a lot did) to extract full value. The ones I couldn't cross I took a bath on. So now I will buy NGC coins but it has to be at a discount no matter how great I think the coin is and then it immediately goes to PCGS.
1) I like uniformity and presentation.
2) I hate white prongs. Especially the fangs on small gold coins. So distracting
3) outside of the optics I'm not a huge fan of the newer PCGS slabs either.
4) I pretty much like to stick to purchases that have several things going for it.
A) Great coin older holder in pristine condition
C) stickered
D) Great coin
this keeps be from over buying and keeps my collection uniform. It works for me but probably doesn't for most. That's ok with me. I like to buy the coin and the holder and the sticker whenever possible . The whole enchilada.

I've never done business with a dealer who claimed an NGC CAC coin was worth less because it wasn't in a PCGS CAC holder. However I know there is a few
Oh I do. Actually a lot. The exact words usually , "I'd like that coin better in a PCGS holder". I think in their heads they are thinking, "I have these customers for this coin but they will want PCGS/CAC".
Like it or not PCGS/CAC coins bring more $ as a whole then NGC/ CAC. Should it be that way? Probably not. For me it's as simple as I hate the NGC vessel and I'm a crossing . I won't pay the same price pound for pound for a NGC/ CAC coin as I would a PCGS/CAC so include me in that camp. I have to factor in the reality it may not cross.

No, I don't accept that premise. I can use it as a teachable moment though.

If I like the coin and feel it's properly graded and at the right price I will buy it in any holder. But 99% of my collection is in PCGS slabs. I like the aesthetics of PCGS slabs much more than the competition tho ICG slabs are attractive, too.

I absolutely despise the shape of an ICG holder. It's the oddball out and if you have any mixed with other slabs and try to pick up a stack the ICG holder F's up the deal!

I have also read comments from dealers who first send coins to PCGS for grading and if they don't like the grade the coin receives then it goes off to NCG where they expect higher grades.
Before I collected gold I was a Walking Liberty fan. Nearly my whole collection was PCGS CAC. When I went to sell it the NGC coins were the ones the dealers wanted least and offered less for them.
I agree that when dealers are buying the slab matters but when the dealers are selling then all slabs are equal.
I have only done it once. When I was finishing my Classic Head $2.50 gold set, I was within a couple coins to having all of the set in PCGS coins. The previous PCGS selections had not been intentional; they were simply the coins I liked. So I looked at only PCGS for the last couple pieces.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This is a common negotiating tactic used by dishonest dealers. Before there was third party grading, dishonest dealers would frequently grade a coin AU when buying and then call it choice BU when selling it. That's why third party grading became popular with collectors and unpopular with many coin dealers. I remember selling a coin to a dealer at a coin show with an ANACS Photo Certificate after they first came out. After the deal was completed, the dealer yelled "No one is going to tell me how to grade MY coins!!!" then proceeded to tear up the ANACS Photo Certificate right in front of me and then throw it into his waste can. A couple of years later this same dealer was selling mostly certified coins because that's what his customers wanted. That said, any dealer that uses a coin being in an NGC slab as justification for making a low ball offer risks having the same customer using the same tactic when negotiating a purchase from that same dealer.

Absolutely yes.
It took a while to finally admit what was important to me and that I didn't care what others thought, but I've never regretted it in all the years since.
I don’t play the holder or sticker game (would go broke). Nor do I believe in making generalizations about TPG’s. I buy numerous collections / estates where it’s take it all.
I have raw coins and slabbed material from the 4 TPG accepted by eBay (ANACS, ICG, PCGS, NGC). Most my slabbed coins PCGS / NGC. An NGC fattie USGTC cracked and submitted to our hosts got the same grade NGC gave it what 30 yr ago.
I price the coin not the holder whether raw or slabbed. Currently all my submissions (coins and currency) PCGS.
Being in the biz since 1990 I run a lean, mean, green machine. FOH costs cut to the bone, unnecessary expenses avoided, no wasting time with tire kickers / lowballer PL, and buying right.
My focus now is getting some world currency (the new frontier) Pcgs submitted. Wonder if they have an inventory manager app for currency like the one for coins.
Don’t give in to tirekickers trying chisel you about what holder it’s in especially nice PQ coin. Not your prob pay their cross or sticker costs. If can’t sell at shows for what I want can move them online or sometimes happens vice versa.
At shows I get cheapo buyers (tire kickers) try chisel me all the time - my fav this guy telling me on coin of mine trying lowball “I buy below bid (off bourse / dealers) to flip to other dealers.” I told him laughing “well go find one.”
After some thought I have to say that yes I will pass on one holder, the PCGS Hanson holders. I will not buy one of those without considering the cost to have it reholdered to remove that label.

I used to buy NGC coins more readily and have had good luck crossing on some high value coins. I have also downcrossed one coin. But, as my collection has become exclusively PCGS, I am very hesitant to buy NGC coins. Also, I have had a couple of NGC coins that were CAC that I was unable to cross even at a lower grade. Fortunately, it was on lower value coins. This was eye opening and made me more cautious. It’s definitely a tricky game to play. You have to be prepared for failure and or losses.
I don't play that game any longer. I've had some nice NGC coins that were stickered which not cross at same grade to PCGS. These coins were purchased from one of the most respected dealers I've ever known. And no, I'm not going to send it in five times, or crack it out and send it in raw an additional who knows how many times and hope I get lucky. PC and NGC do have different grading standards, but over time, grading / opinion can be a moving target. No thank you.

I only buy coins in PCGS holders for my registry sets. I sometimes buy NGC coins to break out to put in my coin folders. Morgan dollars in particular.
