ID a Coin

Hello All,
I am not a big coin collector but am becoming more interested. I am trying to identify a coin found in my Dads old belongings.
Sorry for the bad pictures. The coin is dated 1861 on the front but I could not find a match on the internet for the image on the back. I could try to take more pictures with a better camera if need be.

    That is what is called a Love Token. The 1861 Dime was the host coin, and then someone engraved the back. Looks like a M and a S

    What you have is a 1861 US dime where someone filed the design on the reverse off to engrave initials most likely of a loved one. Given the date of the dime, I would guess that it was given to a family member fighting in the Civil War or to remember a person that was lost to the war.

    Ha Ha good to know. It was sure bugging me for the last few days. It was a coin my Dad took in probably in the 80's working at a post office in Kentucky. Looks like I came to the right place.
