GTG - 1964 Kennedy Half Accented Hair Proof - GRADE POSTED

Several folks nailed it, and everybody was in the ballpark. PCGS graded the coin PR67.

For those interested in the backstory: Sometime in the late aughts, I stopped at a dealer's table at LB where there was a large bowl of low-priced coins. I quickly pawed through them and this half (in an NGC PF67 holder) really caught my eye. I don't collect Kennedys (the series is mainly clad), but have always liked the design, and figured this would make a great type coin. For $35, I didn't even have to check the price guides before pulling the trigger.

Fast forward about ten years: I had been using NGC boxes to store my collection, even though 95% of my collection was PCGS, because they accommodated all the major companies' slabs. Then PCGS redesigned their slabs and they no longer fit into NGC boxes, so I switched to using PCGS boxes, which won't hold NGC slabs. I decided to cross (or sell) my handful of NGC slabs at that point, so I could organize the coins as I wanted instead of keeping a separate NGC box for their slabs. I've never liked the aesthetics of NGC slabs anyway, although (brilliant/cameo silver) proofs look better in them than most other coins, IMO.

So, I cracked the Kennedy and sent it in with a few other raw coins, thinking it had about a 50/50 shot at getting either a plus or CAM designation, maybe even both. No such luck. That was the same submission where I cracked a Texas commem from an NGC 67 CAC holder, and it came back MS65! I think I also lost a point on a Merc dime that I cracked from an ANACS holder. Definitely my worst submission ever, and why I rarely submit raw coins anymore. The graders definitely woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day, but it's not worth taking another shot on the half even though it might get a CAM if submitted again (and maybe again).
