2020 Uncirculated Coin Set - 20RJ; Who's Buying?

RichRRichR Posts: 3,920 ✭✭✭✭✭

Reduced mintage limit of 213,000 sets @ $25.25

I might actually buy 4 or 5 sets on Monday.

Too bad the "W" quarters aren't also included.

I'm picking up a couple sets

I'll get 1 to finish my albums for this year, but probably will sell all my sets in albums out of frustration on the price increases. Time to move to all classics.

Unfortunately 213,000 is still too many. Sales of these have been sliding for two decades along with the secondary market value.

There are only 215,000 of the 2017 EU set and that coin set still sells $5 back of initial price.

I gave a brief thought to it but I just can’t do it. I found some way to justify the 2020 limited edition silver set (I think I found a way) but the prices too high and the odds of being stuck with it forever are too high. And I really don’t like the packaging of the new era of mint sets.

I quit buying uncirculated coin sets after 2006. As far as I can see, most of these non-precious metal uncirculated coin sets have no after market value.

I own every year from 1959 to 2006. And with the exception of the silver unc sets, which I do like, the other sets just take up space.

At this stage of my collecting, I have no interest in collecting any coins that do not have silver or gold in them.

    Pass on this one.

I'm buying one. The lower mintage limit might be a draw, but the absence of any 'W' nickel puts a big damper on demand.

None for me. I stopped buying proof/mint sets years ago when the secondary prices fell off a cliff. I can see folks getting them to finish albums though.

Ordered mine quickly, no hangups. Funny that I am old enough to remember when these Mint Sets would sell 2 or 3 million sets per year routinely.

It wasn't that long ago. As late as 1989 they were selling 2 million per year. Even into this century they were selling over 1 million per year. 2005 was the last year over 1 million at 1.16 million. They've dropped off a cliff lately with some years not even getting to 300,000. They might have only sold 213,000 even if the Mint hadn't cut off production early.

If these figures are accurate I might quickly buy another and will have to act fast before they are gone at that price, people on eBay already selling them for more and I don’t want to have to resort to buying from one of these sellers.

Bought one, not the greatest of quality, I think only a couple of coins could make a top MS70 grade the others would just about make a 65-67 and a 67 at a push. P mint folder came with one coin with a lamination error so have sent it off to NGC to get verified. Would like another set so I can cherry pick out the best coins from them both to send off for grading.

Had someone just buy 9 of them, thought this might be why.

Why the fast sellout? No w cent like last year, no w nickel, just pure speculation due to limited run?

Yes, but I'm not sure what that proves. Mint and Proof sets have been continuously dropping for a decade. The secondary market has been moribund for years - including 1959 sets. 1959 Mint sets have a greysheet price of $40 but you won't get near that from any dealer. It's hard to find any market make who will pay more than 75% of greysheet these days.

How true....however, current price and sold prices for the 2020 sets on ebay tell a different story. As of today, average sold price is 30%+ above Mint issue price, and this is even before "No longer available" from the Mint.
